Trachycarpus latisectus (image)

A T. latisectus planted in Victoria. it is considered marginal for zone 8 so it is good to provide some type of protection. There are not many images of this palm so I posted an image for enthusiasts.

Love the marginals! the real possibility of growing what shouldn't be there is a real thrill!
FYI, I think it was Lorek who has proposed that Trachycarpus latisectus be reduced to Trachycarpus martianus ssp. latisectus... I think it's ridiculous, as if you're going to reduce latisectus to a subspecies, you have to do the same for T. wagnerianus (as it qualifies under the same conditions... ie. the single nucleotide substitution, and other taxonomic details). I wouldn't be suprised if we start seeing T. fortunei ssp. wagnerianus...

I agree that latisectus differs from martianus. And that wagnerianus is a different palm than fortunei. What is interesting about wagnerianus is the variability. I notice less variability in martianus or latisectus but then again I see less of these palms. The problem in the Trachycarpus world is the failure to draw permanent conclusions. It seems that Europe leads the way and we must agree with their speculations. They can do the work and then we can enjoy the palms here in North America if they insist.
