Someone in Victoria did try T. oreophilus and found that his grew well in cool temps but was sensitive to frost. I have two specimens with palmate leaves. I got them from a palmnut here on the island. I'm under the impression that they get larger than the regular fortunei. But along with latisectus they require protection. I'm speaking from USDA z8 here. Others in the US have lost them as seedlings because they were tough to grow. Since someone made them pass through seedling stage with success I decided to grow them big in order to cross them with hardy Trachys. Wish me luck because as you know... We have few Trachys in the PNW!

I have about 10 T. Oreophilus I germinated from seed last year. They are still strap leaf plants. They are in 1 gal pots & left outside without protection. So far we had a single night that dropped to 24 F for a few hours. They show no sign of any damage. I also have 4 Latisectus planted out by my mailbox in the front yard that have 8-10 fan leaves each. These were also not damaged at all by the 24 F freeze. I do not plan to protect any of my trachy's at all. We rarely if ever get down below 20 F so I can't tell you how much more they will take, but they should increase in hardiness as they mature.
