Now it my turn

Post by macario » Sun Nov 18, 2007 3:32 pm

Hello, well now its my turn to starts covering up stuff. Its still kind of warm in the 40's and 50's but I know its just a matter of time before it gets cold. So today I starting covering the zone 8 stuff which thats spending its first year in the ground. I covered the sabal palmetto. I also started covering the T. wagnerianus and will cover the W. Filifera the same way as the T. wagnerianus. It will probably take me till tomorrow to finish up.

Sounds like you should have one more pretty nice day to cover them. Supposed to be almost 80 here in Kansas tomorrow.
I saw where it was going to be a lil colder in Chicago, but not much. If I ever get to Chicago, I want to come see your "Cuban Chicago" and maybe go get a Cuban sandwich with you. Have you ever been to the "Tacky Turtile" in Indian Rocks Beach, Florida? THE BEST CUBAN SANDWICH EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OMG, YOU HAVE TO TRY IT!!!!

Yes palmetto man It does keep us in shape doesnt it!

Kansas It will probably only be in the 50's here. The one thing I like about my yard is that if its in the 50's its warmer in my yard. I have my weather station sensors all ready to go with new batteries for the winter.

I have never been to Indian rocks beach FL. Cuban sandwich is ok if your on the go, but I prefer a meal that will stick to my bones like black beans and rice and some ropa vieja and some home made sangria!!
Damn now im hungry!!

This summer coming up Im gonna have a wooden sign made with palm trees on the side and in the middle it will say "welcome to Cuba north" but it will be in spanish

Hey Kansas...thanks for making me hungry!

80 tomorrow eh??..well I hope the westerlies are blowing my way...

By the way..remember that little trachy I was going to ship to you before all the red tape got in the way??

Well, we've nicknamed it "kansas"...its in the ground now and becoming a nice little tree here in Ajax on the Lake...

I've yet to crack out the palm house which will serve as its winter home...but likely early December..

Yea!!! Kansas!. I love it!
I was wondering what your secret was for your keeping it in your garage last year?
Last week I yanked my pot planted Trachy out of the ground and with in the week in my garage, it started looking sick. Today I pulled some stuff that did not need to be in the GH out and put the Trachy in there after a good soaking water. Hope it works.

trachy's

Kansas..

The key is consistency in temps..

For the potted ones that I'm bringing in, I'll aclimatize them..keep them off the cement...the ideal garage temps should be around 40-50F-daytime with as much light as possible..then I spray mist during the day...

In January or when the temps drop, I'll throw them in my garage greenhouse where the temps are between 32F and 60F with plenty of light...and humidity...

I have a few permanent in the ground and they are still pushing out new growth-slowly-

That is quite the job Macario. The Teepee system looks decent and will still allow you to add additional heat at ground level if necessary.

When I had it in the garage, it was actually on carpet. I have a best friend that does carpet for a living and he gives me good used carpet to put down in my garage. Just keeps things warmer in there. Anyways, I went ahead and put it in the Greenhouse where temps are from mid 80's to mid 60's. Althou we will see how that fares this week as we are going to drop A LOT  on Thanksgiving. But ifeel the greenhouse will still allow more Sun and more humidity than if I left it in the garage.

macario - nice job. I wonder what your neighbors think about your palm teepee in your backyard. I have to do something with a somewhat large butia capitata, and your pictures inspired me to build a teepee. Goo dlucj and keep us posted with pics and results of your winter protection.

Now to the real stuff - post your favorite recipe for your black beans and rice and ropa vieja.

I like your idea with the Palmetto, a quick and easy way to protect a larger Palm!

necessity is the mother of all invention

Post by macario » Mon Nov 19, 2007 9:35 am

Well I didnt really invent the tee pee lol but I built the square frame of pvc and it kept getting blown around and I ended up putting boards on an angle to hold it up. So I said what the heck might as well extend the boards and get rid of the plastic. I found some 12 ft 2 x 4s and screwed them together and they were very strong and sturdy so I went with it. I was thinking to that if I wanted to I could staple some of those foam boards I saw alchris use on one of his posts, and trim it to fit.

That why I love this board everyone has so many ideas we really help each other get things done!!

macario, nice pics, thanks for posting them.
Everything looks really healthy after summer.

Did you cut half (or one-third) fronds off the palm in first pic (the teepee resident)?
I was thinking you could throw burlap over the plastic (but you put up boards, which was a great idea).
Unless it's very heavy, say, 6 mil or 12 mil plastic, here cold temps just shred it in the wind, by spring pieces are all over the place.

I'm trying to remember who it was that said NOT to wrap Christmas lights right up against the trunk, but it
obviously works for you. Somebody's palm got cooked that way.

And (stomach growl), where is that recipe...?

Is it just me or  does it seem like only a couple of months since macario UNPACKED his palms?

Very nice Macario. With all that mulch should help. Are they all going to get overhead protection or just the one in the tpee?
I have a similar idea for my palms as the tpee will post pics Saturday.
