Yucca Faxoniana

Post by DesertZone » Wed Oct 05, 2005 7:15 pm

Here is a small yucca Faxoniana. It has done very little since 2003, but is planted in a very dry spot.

Hey everyone,
This a pic from a new member Kansas "Wes" He picked this nice yucca up for under $100. I think it is a Faxoniana, but not for sure. I think he spent his money well :D

Nice one Aaron! Obviously a tough Yucca. I have two seed grown that are currently in one gallon pots. I reckon I'll try 'em out in the garden some day.

Cheers, Barrie.

Nice work guys.
No winter protection at all, Aaron?
Not even a cardboard box over it?

And look at Josef's !!!! gorgeous bloom.
So much for keeping the rosette dry, huh?

Josef....Very nice, that is awesome 8)

Barb,
I do cover it in the winter with clear plastic. When it starts getting a tighter crown (more leaves) than I will leave it be. :D

Aaron, how do you keep the needle tips from punching through the plastic?
Nevertheless it certainly works for you.

Josef, here's a pic of Yucca rigida from Tropical Centre in the Netherlands.
We North Americans wish we had access to nurseries like this!

How do you keep them from heating up during sunny cold days?
Or would that not harm them?

I poke a hole near the top on 2 sides. This lets out very hot air and allows air movement so to prevent rotting. :)

I have seen someone use the cheap plastic storage containers, the simiclear ones that you can store shoes and stuff in from wallmart. They have had good success getting smaller plants through the winter, like catus, agaves, and smaller yuccas untill they get bigger and can live on thier own. Then when spring gets here they just stack them together and and put away until winter. I think I'm going to try this come winter. :)

Aaron,
The air holes would definitely be a good idea.
Thanks for letting me pick your brain. :D

And the idea about semi-clear plastic storage units is a good one.
Very creative.
Take some pics please as you install your winter protection.

Hey Aaron,

That's a beauty!
The well-placed rocks, plus the fence colour, show it off nicely.
Good microclimate too I bet.

Aaron,
I think you mentioned you had little snow cover this winter (just like us).
That might have been the reason some didn't make it.

Those yuccas from west Texas that you posted...100 or 200 years old?
Judging from the speed of my yuccas growth

Barb

PS--did you manage to pop some of those Joshua Tree seeds?

I think those yuccas could be 50years? Faxon grow real fast with a little water, after they form a trunk I guess you could get one to grow 10 feet in 10 years.

PS--I have no j-tree seed yet, but when I do I will share. :D
