Hi desert palms, I joined this site for the fact that if you can grow the cold hardy palms, yuccas, cacti, in zone 5b. I think I have hope to grow them here solid 6 to 6a in the Okanagan . I think if you show and talk more of your triumphs over arctic blasts which we know will hit every year. Trail blazing will only pave the way for more eye opening realisation of what is possible, besides the typical tried and true! I showed some neighbors some cold hardy sites for palms they did a flip side and are now hooked on more. Yes you are right it sure is fun . Can you tell us what you have been growing and what has worked for you from small seedlings to established plants? What have you used for protection for each? By the way my favorite vette is 1963 split window. thanx for your response

Ps. the block party wants to know what the temps are in south Idaho today as we were 34 c or 95 f
Need to learn!

OK Palms
I would try trachycarpus takil, sabal minor and rhapidophyllum hystrix for a zone 6 garden. If you had a 15 gallon or larger I believe these species would survive in your area.
The problem is finding a good sized one. I have been looking for a large sabal minor for years.

Re: Need to learn!
Hi, sorry I have taken so long to reply. I will try to answer the palm question first. The only truly hardy palm that I have found for here is rhapidophyllum hystrix and does not do well when young, but is starting to grow faster with age. There is other palms that will live through a winter or two here, but not much longer. I am sure that I or someone else here will find the one "Plam Tree" that will live through even the wost zone 5-6 zone winters. I hope that day comes soonOkanagan desert-palms wrote:Hi desert palms, I joined this site for the fact that if you can grow the cold hardy palms, yuccas, cacti, in zone 5b. I can tell you that most of the palm like yuccas seem to do very well here. Some will die, but keep trying. They pick up much growth with age I hope to have a few pics up this fall.
I don't know what the temp was that day, but I can tell you that the warmest day in my yard so far has been 102 F. (in the shade) for the year. And last winter the low in my yard was a mild 2.1 F.
I would love to hear more from up there, thanks for the responces
P.S The 63 split window is also one of my favorites

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
