Going to Vegas on August 23

Post by Kansas » Sat Jun 30, 2007 6:36 pm

I will be in Vegas from August 23 to 27th. I was wondering if any trees will be ready for picking up seeds from at that time or is it too early?

I was in Vegas in April. The Mediterranean Fan Palms were just ripening at that time around the Mirage. I brought 30 seeds home and had 28 of them germinate. I also found about 20 Brahea Armata which must had been older seeds because the Braheas were not producing seed at the time. So far They are germinating pretty steady. I saw a particularly nice specimen of Butia, very selender trunk and nice recurving leafs, found about 15 seeds from it. There were tons of seedlings all over the planting beds around the hotels. I wanted to fill my suitcase up..LOL.

The best part was the look on the face of people that just happen to be walking by the planting beds as I popped out of them with my short pockets loaded with seeds.....PRICELESS!!!

The planting beds at the Mirage are great for Med fans, Brahea Armata, Butias, Trachycarpus, Washingtonia and Phoenix Canariensis. I think there are some Silver Dates at Caesers Palace. I didn't get close enough to positively identify them. When you are tired of getting your butt kicked in the casino's go walk around the planting beds, tons of seeds in them.
