KNNN told me of this-IT WORKS

Post by Kansas » Fri Jun 01, 2007 5:08 am

Steve informed me of how he pops Cycad and Dioon seeds with 100% pure Perlite w/ NOTHING added. Plus bottom heat.
I went ahead and tried it with some Taitungensis seeds and after two weeks, I have at least three popped seeds.
So next time try just 100% pure Perlite w/ nothing added and see if it works for you too and post your findings.

This is just an adaptation of other people's techniques.......Seems to work out well with seeds that can take some time to germinate.

Any sterile medium will probably give the same results, I prefer Perlite because it recycles into my potting mixes.

Also makes it Easier to keep track of moisture levels, The bottom of the seed should be darker from the moisture in the mix, while the top stays dry.

Just checked today and I got at least three more Taitungensis seeds cracking using this method.

Thanks.

I am hoping that my C. panzihuahensis will germinate fairly quickly now that I have made the change.

After 17 days, 4 of my 10 C. panzihuahensis seeds have cracked using Steve's method. No sign of any growth yet but the crack on one is now over 1/16" wide.

Pics, both in focus and out of focus are attached. The seeds are stained from spending 3 months buried in seed starter/perlite mix before I tried Steve's method.

I used a 2 to 1 mix of seed starter and perlite, kept the medium moist and added bottom heat.

The cracks can be a little hard to see.

Darn. The postimage server is down. I'll post the pics in the morning.
