Don, I know, just pulling your leg...
Yup we've got bud and coors...all we live for is the bud commercials (on really s-l-o-w weekends).

Wait'll you taste our Okanagan beer (right, Jay?). It'll stand your socks up...without being in 'em.

Poor husband's had shingles for the last 3 months (hence my planting that bloomin' palm by myself today).
He's suffering big-time.

You may find it will not grow for the next little while but eventually it will take off. With your hot summers make sure you keep it well watered. I would only fertilize once more in early August and then just leave it until you need to protect it in the winter. Continue to water. Never let the soil dry out on a trachy.
Good luck to you.
By the way I have a 15 year old trachy that is now 20' tall. It was planted in the ground as a very small seedling.

That Trachy is a beauty, Barb.

Congratulations. You are now in Zone Denial.

I hope Hubby gets rid of those damn shingles.

I'll have to try Okanagan Springs when I get out there this spring. Is it an independent? I haven't seen it here. I used to prefer Kokanee until Labatts got it's grubby hands on Columbia Brewing. Now it is almost like any other mass produced beer.

That is the one thing about Vegas. No Canadian Beer. Sam Adams was the closest I could find to Sleemans and Rickerts. Even the English/ Irish brands were different to what I am used to getting here.

Yes indeed, however 1516 is now my fav.
And it's all good for us  all that stuff about the Bavarian brewing laws of 1516. Nice to see NO additives, except a pizza.

That looks great Barb. I`m sure it has been waiting for 30 years to let it`s feet grow. I should have some of my palms planted soon. Already stocked up on the A5 35 for my back.

Wes : "Never let the soil dry out on a trachy."

I'll second that. When I had my Takils outside last Summer, they absolutly LOVED wet feet all Summer.

Minus 1 tonight...mama's sweatin bricks about baby cactus, ficus benji and trachy outside...I wrapped them up with so many blankets, I think the cactus and fig will suffocate (or the mice will move in).

It's almost spring...but man, what a long wait.
Woodstove's on...feels like November outside. Brrr. Cold wind.
Had hail twice today for only minutes each time.

Only the pic of my hack-job Ficus turned out.

Don, thanks for recovery wishes for husband--the pain is subsiding somewhat. Your wife's had shingles more than once????
That must be awful..and inside? At least one wouldn't scratch!
Bet Spikey loves beer (maybe it'll keep him away from your palms)

Wes and kansas, thanks for the advice on trachy care, will do!
Wes yours is aged 15 and 20 feet tall??? Jeez, you'll wonder whether I had bound my trachy's feet when little.
This November's Vancouver weather didn't hurt yours?

Allen, thanks. Now I can wake up in the middle of the night and worry if my trachy (et al) are OK...and I thought we were empty nesters and had no more worries :D
Yes on your trip you'll have to try OK Springs, the brewery is right downtown Vernon. Think it was bought by Sleeman two or three yrs ago. Vegas doesn't have Cdn beer? Oh well, when in Rome...
Rickard's Red is super too. Hell, they're all good!

John, better get 2 tubes of rub. When are you planting? Long range weather forecast is lousy for us until just after beginning of April. Don't forget to take pictures (if you still have the strength to lift your arms)!

G'nite everybody.

Hi Barb,
Yes ,she has had them a few times, seems to run in her family,I really don't think it is a hereidity trait at all, just one of those things.
Spikey loves orange juice, but the wife would skin me alive if I gave him some of my beer!!LOL
Raine about 3 inches here yesterday, and is suppose to rain all week,I took off this week to start planting a few things, but now everything is all muddy!!!!!
Well gives me time to do a lot of repotting!!!

Don, I really feel for your wife. She's likely discovered ways to minimize the effects...it's a horrible disease.
Reducing stress seems to be key. My husband doesn't GET stress, he GIVES it (just kidding).

3 inches of rain...wow, send some here.
Enjoy repotting (one of my favourite things).
Cheers.

No the November weather didn't do any damage to the trachies. However the winds did bend one of the fronds on my largest one. I reached a low of -7C and that will not hurt a trachy.
I am noticing that my largest chamaerops humilis has some of the trunks where the spears are pulling out. I fear I will loose some of the trunks. I am going to keep it dry and hope that it will grow new fronds out of the centre of those trunks. Some of the larger trunks are fine. Go figure. I guess because we went from warm weather to cold so quickly this year that I see a lot more damage to this palm than ever before. It saw -9C in Jan 2004 and had no damage to it at all. There is no damage to the fronds so I can not figure why I can pull out the fronds out of the centre spear. Very disappointing.
Everything else looks fine except the small c. humulis and my cordy.

Wes
could the spears be pulling out from all the rain?
Maybe some temporary cover to keep the rain off if so?
What a shame.

I had a large golf umbrella over it most of the winter so I don't think so. I think it was due to being warm and then in November going down to -7C so quickly. The palm never had a chance to harden off.
I am sure Barrie or someone else would be better to tell me what has happened but that is my theory.
