Beginning the germination process!

Yes, I'll leave them in community pots until there's 1, maybe 2 leaves.
Plan to use the "water method" to minimize root disturbance, just tipping community pot into a large bowl and let water separate roots.

Anybody know of a less root-shock/invasive method?

Individual pots? Other then the triple amounts of pots you need, its how ive germaneted most of my seeds ( untill this year)

I think germinating in individual pots is a waste of time as 100% germination is seldom achieved.
Community pots are almost solely used in the palm nursery industry.

I think floating them out of community pots via water must be the least damaging to tender fleshy roots that break easily.

Probably still transplant shock though.

I always try to seperate them using water, and to still have a little of the original medium on the roots when they're placed in the individual pots.

In addition, I've done a vitamin dip (SuperThrive, Thrive Alive B-1 etc.) but could never tell if it helped since plants survived.

Had they died, I would've said the dip didn't help.

How long did you soak the Chilean wine palm seeds before potting in soil? How long were the radicals when you potted them? Thanks!

Hi Gpenny,

I soaked them for basically the same time as the Nannorrhops. The radicals were around the same length as the earlier pics in the topic (maybe 1/16 inch ?).

I've now noticed roots emerging on the Chamaerops humilis var. cerifera, Phyllostachys pubescens (Moso bamboo), and Sabal minor var. Louisiana!

I've also noticed some really interesting trachy growth from some previous seeds. The Chusan took a little while to germinate, and are growing fairly tall, with 1 leaf each. The Tesan germinated a bit quicker, is growing a bit shorter, and is already working on its 2nd leaf.

I looked a little closer, and saw that around half of the Chusan seedlings are growing a 2nd leaf, however, this is a lot slower in comparison to the Tesan. As well, the base of the stem and the leaf of the Tesan seem to be larger than Chusan. I planted the Tesan seed probably around 2 months after the Chusan seeds, but the palms are close to the same size! I've got around 500 other Tesan seeds germinating right now, so hopefully they all show the same speed as this one!

It looks to me that the Chusan stems are thicker, or maybe it's pic zoom only.

Hey, when're you gonna pot up (at least) the Chusan?

(I know...I know...somewhere between 3 and 4 a.m., right?)

I received my 50 Waggie seeds today.
After 2 hours of soaking, they're all still floating. Hmmmm...

Thanks! I also just noticed that the T. fortunei from Tennessee have finally started germinating. None germinated when I was soaking them (at the same time as the Hayes Stiffie), so I'm pretty relieved!

You'll have some fun watching those Tesan grow,they are very unique
and surprisingly similar to the Bulgarian Trachys.

Here's an interesting comparison picture I posted a few years ago
of Tesan vs. regular* Fortunei-Tesan are the fat ones!

I really couldn't begin(well I guess I could)to count them.
I have 400-500 seedlings of various Trachys,Chamaerops,Sabal,Caryota and Butia.

I also have many Trachys like the ones pictured or larger.

2 Fortunei
4 Waggies
2 Manipur
3 Oreophilus(2 seedlings)
19 Takil(seedlings)
2 T. Latisectus
1 T.Martianus
1 T.Martianus (Patkai hills)
1 T.Nanus
3 T.Tesan
1 T.Misan
1.supposedly T.Nova,looks more like a green Princeps

Lot's of other seedlings too.
I also have some other palms like Bizzy,Washys etc.

Some of my favorite Chammys are C.volcano X a cross between
C.cerifera and C.Volcano-Regular Volcano and Ridgida green.

Lot's of other rare crosses between Butias and Chammy as well.

Well,I guess they are rare.

And in the oh oh department, need some advice QUICK about new waggie seeds

Soaked these new Waggie seeds, looked like all floaters for the first while.
Then (poof) they started growing before I got around to taking the papery bark off.

I added Hydrogen Peroxide so they wouldn't rot.

Barb, it might help lower the chances of mold forming when the seeds are planted, but as far as I know, it's not necessary to remove the skin.

I just checked some others, and the first B. eriospatha has also germinated now. Some of the Dioon edule are starting to send up their first leaves, they almost look like fern fronds.

Barb, the best thing about this Protea is that it's supposed to be hardy to zone 6a or 6b !!
