Dioon edule

Post by macario » Thu Nov 15, 2007 6:38 am

Well todayI am going through all the posts under cycads and trying to take it all in. I decided on a Dioon edule. Thanks to Mr. Chumley I should have one in a week or two. I chose this one because I have an area in my house that got lots of sun and kind of dry and I didnt know what to put in this space. So this spring I will be asking everyones advice ( as usual ) because I will be trying to work it into the yard plan somehow.

Good choice 8)
USDA Zones 8 - 11. Mature and established plants have been reported to tolerate temperatures down to 9ºF (-12.8ºC) for four days. Dioon edule is one of the most cold hardy cycads.

The above quote is for plants in the open, add some protection and I'm sure you would be able to keep them going.
The only trick would be to keep the leaves protected during the Winter, Dioons are a bit slower growing when small, the more leaves you can get it to hold, the faster it's overall growth will be.

Don't forget the pictures :)
