Wollemi Pine

Thanks to Lori at Jurassic Plants Nursery http://www.jurassicplantsnursery.com I was able to obtain a very nice specimen of Wollemia nobilis, the Wollemi Pine. It stands 19" tall and will be planted next spring. A treat to own such a rare tree.

Hey, I must have slept through September to miss this post!

Barrie, what a beauty.
I've been interested too, and went as far as getting an import permit re Australia.

Haven't got the one from Oz yet.
Tired of waiting, and happy to get one from Lori too!

It'll be here any day.

We can compare notes...and soil...and kindergarten, and grade 1...

Great pics of a superb plant!

oppalm, you'll get so engrossed in the research (as I did), that you simply MUST have one!
These go back to the age of the dinosaurs, along with cycads and ginkgos...so very cool.

My Wollemia nobilis arrived!

As always, Jurassic Plants Nursery supplied a great specimen, well wrapped and packaged, arriving in great shape.
I'm the dummy, though, who carried it upside down (aaargh!).

Here finally is mine (thanks Lori):

Bark is already turning woody. Mature trees have BUBBLY bark that looks like boiling chocolate!

"Coppicing" evident. The literature states the ability to grow multiple trunks "...may have evolved as a defense against drought, fire or rock-fall in the steep canyons where it grows in the wild, thereby ensuring its survival." It can be grown as a single stemmed tree by pruning off coppiced branches, or a bushier shrubby form. Bubbly bark starting? Cool!

Internet literature for the Wollemi is increasing!
There was very little two years ago.

Fertilizer: recommended low (or no) phosphorous.
6-0-6 was recommended by several sites.
Acid soil.

Apparently a sure way to kill a Wollemi is to overwater it, especially when it's not actively growing.

Not yet Wes, next spring perhaps. I did pot it up to a 2 gallon container and left it in the unheated greenhouse.

Mine seems fine.
It's at a north window in a cool bedroom.
When it's above zero, I set it outside for the day.

Not watering it, but misting once a week.
