SWEET pictures. You got quite a container ranch there. Where do you overwinter the container stuff? Whats your typical low temp in the winter? and whats your typical winter like? sorry for all the questions. Your stuff look fantastic.

Oppalm I have the palms in containers for now until they get larger to plant. I have a double car garage with overhead lighting for the winter. The bananas come in the house as well as any other tender plant.Winter is typically mild compared to the rest of Canada although not as mild as the Southwest of British Columbia 8 to 8b my low temp here last year was
- 21 c or -5 f beginning of Dec for three days a zone 6b. I have three needle palms and one larger 15 gal. Trachy in the ground for this winter. I will be planting more of my container stock after I see how well the ones in the ground do. I have some 2 gal Sabal louisiana and Trachy takil that are still to small to plant yet.

what kind of overhead lighting in your garage? I use a bank of fluorescent lights (shop lights) with the T8 bulbs in my basement and have not lost a palm inside the past 2 winters. Just curious as to what to what you are using.

How are you protecting your plams in ground?

Thanks Palmettoman I will be putting overhead protection for the ones in the gound. Hope I don`t have to use to many heat lamps during the cold snaps. Show us some updates of your palms in the ground I will be particularly interested as I think you are in zone 6 as well.

Oppalm I use Three 600 watt metal halide bulbs 8 hous a day the minimum amount of candle power units for most of my palms and yuccas. They seem to like about that amount of light to keep them from going totally dormant. I find it easier to bring them back into full sun in the spring. In the next couple of years I will be planting the bulk of my cold hardy palms.

Yeah..I'm in and around Z6---trying to turn my yard into Z7...

I have some palm pics coming...(wmills/washys/euros)..

Protection will likely commence 6-8 wks from now with plexi frames..

Your palms are looking really good...

Palmettoman look forward to your pics from Ont. Protection for my palms will likely happen below - 14c 5f normally during Jan Feb for short durations of an arctic blast. Plexi frames? Definetly want to see some pics of those.

I'm lookin at Palruf plexi frames for my in ground palms..

They are durable (can handle a good snow load) and are uv resistant..

By around early November, I'll be contructing them so I will post as I go along...

I don't plan to cover up these palms till the temps drop well below -8 for a few consecutive nights..

I plan on heating them with light bulbs and a ceramic heater/pail of water combo...

The palms I will be protecting are-windmill palms and europalms..

Thanks Barb. I have lots of juvenile W.filifera W.robusta W.filibusta they grow great in our hot dry desert climate. If you would like a couple next spring let me know. The wife and I go to Vernon to visit friends quite often and could drop them off for you.

I've been jealous of all those great Kansas/Toledo/Wichita posters who jump in their cars and go visit each other's plants!
