I decapitated my palm help!

Post by Ralph_T » Thu Aug 23, 2007 9:49 pm

I got a 16 inch pot, miracle grow soil and a majesty palm last year in April. I kept it next to a window and watered it poorly or less than I should have. A few months later I got the spider mites and webs. THen I learned how to water it ever few weeks but the water just ran through because the soil was dry. Now I watered it by dousing the pot up to the top and all the soil is moist. I will water now every week. All the frons are dead and I decided to chop them off at the base. Now all I have is a stump. I am using miracle grow every week with the watering and I am practicing better insect and mold control. Just picked upa spray to do that. It has neem oil and pethrin or somehting called that. Any chance of the palm growing again since I cut it off at the base? It's pretty much a stump now in rich soil. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum!

There is always a chance it might push out a new spear, maybe give it 4 weeks and see what happens. Majesty Palms are tough to keep going inside even with the best of care.
( these are marketed as inside plants, and they would probably do OK if you kept your house above 80*F with a 70% RH :) I never had much luck with these, so I don't care for them. Other people here do have some nice ones )

If you are looking for an inside Palm that you can enjoy wathcing grow, then maybe a Cat Palm, ( Chamaedorea cataractarum), or a
Parlour Palm, ( Chamaedorea elegans ). Both of these are far more tolerant of inside conditions and do better in lower light levels.
(There are a lot more too, these are just a couple that are easier to find)

If all you have is a stump I would cut back on the water and fertilizer. Without any top your plam doesn't need any extra water or nutrients. I would use some bone meal and a bi-weekly watering schedule to help with root development, which no doubt have been injuried.

I would also like to add the Spindle palm as a very good indoor plam. I have two and they spend half the year inside, which is when they put on the most growth.

Think it's a gonner, happened to me couple years back,if you pull the stump out of the pot, check the roots,if they aren't white in color and look all dried up or even mushy, toss it in the compost pile and get another one,or different palm.
I mist mine almost daily, and water about every 2 weeks, just depends on how much sunlight you give them to determine the amount of watering they need.
