Big Big Mistake
So my beautiful christmas palm I was nursing back to health, I think I just killed. I am almost sick to my stomach. It was cold here for a few nights, near zero so I wrapped the trunk in rope lights....then I wrapped that in a blanket. Today I took the blanket off and it revealed a horrible sight. Most of the trunk has literally withered away. Almost looks mummified. It turned brown and weak. It was obviously way to hot and dried the palm right up. The crown still looks fine but the trunk is a mess. I soaked it in water hoping to save it but I have a feeling it's a goner.
I guess these are the pitfalls you take when learning something new.
It sucks

Dear Mr Arctic Palm, sorry for your loss. Don't give up - you never know what might happen. Perhaps we could get the entire PalmsNorth nation to will your Adonidia back to good health.
Just so we all learn something - whats the answer with the Christmas lights? do you think you should have wrapped the trunk in a blanket/sheet/burlap first (so the lights are not in direct contact with the palm trunk) , then put the lights over the blankey and then wrapped the lights on for additional insulation? Whats your thoughts?

Hi Arctic,
Sorry to hear about your Adonidia . I think every year we encounter new problems hopefully they only happen once and we learn from them. I know I've made a ton of mistakes.
I was surprised that you went to that extent to protect it but after checking the Hamilton airport weather it got down to 1.2C on the 16th...wow! I guess you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.
Phil
