Hello is anyone growing one in there yard any size? I have been playing with this one and they are very cold hardy. I found pics of these growing in zone 7a-b with lights on them in the winter as protection. I think I should be able to keep this guy healthy in zone 6b with micro climate and lots of winter protection? What do you think? Heres pics of my palmettos growth from april till yesterday.

Thanx palmettoman. Yes its pretty protected with southern exposure. Thats cool they have sabal minors there. I have a a few in the ground near the palmetto. And in the winter it will be even more protected.
Nice looking palmetto mike. Good luck on keeping that big boy healthy. How fast will that grow ? I am thinking you may need a massize shelter in a few years to keep it going. best of luck.

well Right now Its got 6ft of trunk. your right about the enclosure. I have my 10' wide by 10' long by 10' high from last year. plus I just ordered a 30' 30' 18' one for the whole yard lol. I know Im sick, but realistcly its what I need to keep everything healthy. I dont use heat but I do keep the heat in that the palms and ground absorb from the sun. I dont heat the palms to keep them growing much I just keep them dry and around 20f or so, and use christmas lights and spot lights here and there. It doesnt get below zero here and from the enclosure I had last year with the sensors around the yard, I realized where I am located it doesnt take much effort to keep the temps around 20f-30f at night. I really only need the enclosure for jan and feb. All my palms are cold hardy nothing tender. Trachys, sabals, needles, and a butia and 2 w. filifera.

Thanx steve. The enclosure I have coming is so very easy to put together like a monster tent. I had a smaller one last year and it was very easy to put together and pull apart plus it comes with a 10 year warranty. It was very effective in keeping heat in. I also want to make sure the palms I have have time to grow a good root system. I cant wait til the palmetto has a full head of leaves on it. No one will believe I have it. I would also love to see it and my butia flower. My trachys and my sabal minors flowered this year.
mike - where did you get the 30X30X18 structure. got a website. Nice work. You have a pool in your back yard, I'd bet if you kept the heater in it set to a reasonable temp and had your structure over it, that would keep the temps pretty nice inside the structure.

http://www.all-shelters.com/greenhouse.html. If you se a style you like, you just tell them the shape, size, or color and they either have it or get it. Or if you see something elsewhere and t hey dont have it they can get it and beat the price you saw it for,
