Frost??

Post by Arctic Palm » Sun May 13, 2007 8:48 pm

After several weeks of sunny warm weather (upper teens to low 20's) I find out we are supposed to get frost!!!!!!!!
So, out come the christmas flood lights. I have put 2 at the bottom of each planted palm to keep the frost at bay. I put my hand on the tunks and they were warmer then the outside temp (6C). My hope is enough heat will radiate up to stop any frost from forming.

Fingers crossed.

Cold Hardy Palms

Arctic your palms will be fine. The W. robusta is cold rated to -9 c 23 f. The T. fortunei is cold rated -18c 0 f. That little frost you are expecting won`t even faze your palms. Your bananas won`t be able to handle the frost. Just my two cents worth.

Okanagan desert-palms,

Ya I took in the bananas. I do every night. They grow so much better inside. As far as the palms go, both of mine come from the south, I know the Windmill is from Georgia and the Robusta is from Florida (I think). I am sure they have never seen frost before. Better to be safe you know!
Oh hey, tomorrow is supposed to be 29 around here, then Wednesday is supposed to be 12....wacky!!!
