Nice first morning for the palms etc considering...

yesterdays morning low was 10F..it warmed to 51F later in the day,
one of the biggest(1 day) warmups I have seen in these parts-I do recall
it going from 40F to 80F one day in St.Louis...anyway


Winter has apparently ended as far as Trachys are concerned...
on to spring.

I did not plan on saving the Washy last fall as I ran out of lights..
I found a strand that I got 10 c-7 x-mas lights to work on...
and recalled I had some house insulation,this combined with a Thermocube
(on @35F/off @45F)was enough to bring it through-I really thought there
would be a giant purple blob of cotton candy mold on the top-forgot I made a cage
to keep the insulaton off the tissue....I also did not mulch this
year so we shall see it root damage becomes an issue but so far they all look good.

Yesterday as it went above 32F....

Has a little damage to the spear...
they really do not appreciate ANY moisture around the base
(when small)and in the crowns but it may have pushed it through this time.

I think it snowed a half inch as I covered these in November's
early cold wave-moisture took its toll on a few palms.

Little T.Tesan pulled but will be just fine.

B.Armata has some spear damage in its first attemp at surviving winter
here covered,to much moisture and early cold...
Better than 50% chance here I think.

2 C.Cerifera each had one spear pull but not the main one.

For a small sized palm this T.Takil has sailed through 3 winters
without damage!..not bad for a small palm.

C.Cooeri may have 4-6' fronds by the end of the year if I dont let it freeze this winter.

Fingers crossed the B.armata will fully recover.
The color is stunning.

Good ole Trachies, huh? Not much fazes 'em.
Great results considering a crappy winter.

B.Armata may be a candidate for trunk cutting as it has pretty deep spear pull..
just have to keep an eye on the center leaves for now....

Yea those larger Trachys are a breeze,they really dont require much once they are covered.

Looking forward to seeing what the T.Ferns do-the Cooperi should be close to the size of
that bigger one I lost a few years back,if I can keep it safe this spring...pretty sure I covered
it for tonoght...

I am a little surprised by the princep. I would expect a little more damage to the outer fronds.

It satys pretty warm in there,the damage was from
me covering the palms after some snow fell-the moisture
and temps in the low 20s froze the blades through.
