Didn't really have enough materials/or lights to get it all covered...
the Needle palms and Sabal were left uncovered.

Jim,
What a relief that stuff's melting and almost gone.
Glad to see the Princeps and Waggie looking good as always.
Absolutely gorgeous palms!
The needles will come back I bet.
Glad also to see someone else who left a Sabal uncovered unprotected.
Thought I was the only one to do that:
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/16441146917" title="006 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8656/164 ... ec89f3.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="006"></a>
And a Euro Fan Palm, crushed/broken from the weight of 2 feet of snow in one day.

Hi Barb....yea I have plenty of Sabal and Needles, the Needle palms have grown so slow
that it wasn't a big decision to not cover them-not that I had materials anyway...
Needle palms are cool but after seeing how slow they are here and
how quickly they were damaged,I wont miss them-but-if as you say
they may resprout, maybe I will have some respect for them again
but I doubt it- will move from here in another year or 2 and want
to focus on the really cool stuff-you know-the yard bling!
hope your Needle palm is ok Chad!

Me too, Jim, I ran out of lights and materials to cover.
Basically said Sayonara in Fall when I last walked past them.
And frankly, loving the look of feather and palmate-leafed palms as I do, there was no longer any appeal for me with Needles.
Mine looked like a bag of crap when I gave it to John.
It'll be exciting to plan your new garden, Jim.
Hope you let us help...

You know,just the cool stuff!
I would like to expand the cactus area as it is the least of an issue
to deal with,I just need to break it into 2 areas because right now
keeping the Thrico safely warm enough keeps some of the really hardy
barrels from blooming and it would be cheaper to heat a small section
where it is actually needed.
Friday I will bust out at least 4 palms, maybe the Princeps too,we'll see how warm it gets.
That will be fun to see the palms out and the cactus cover open on both ends............
I already know the B.Armata got spear ejection,we'll see whats left.
All the other stuff looked good last time I looked-the 3 headed Y.Gloriosa(maybe more
one bloomed last year)should be a stand out..

Yeah, downsizing...certainly holds appeal.
Your cactus area is spectacular, will be good to have it exposed to some breezes with the ends open.
And seeing those palms opened up will be exciting.
Princeps is one of my favs.
A shame you've got spear damage on the B.armata.
Hope it bounces back with renewed vigor.
I can't believe how well my B.armata sailed through winter with the same protection as the Washies.
One Washy is really fungus-y, the other is fine.
But my B.armata hasn't got a mark on it and is sooooo blue, it's stunning.
Just remembered its my avatar (from a couple years ago)...if I can remember how to change it, will update when I open up the cover.
BTW, how's the Licuala doing?

here is a link to Nov-you can also look at the other months.
Our winter started Nov 11,it was in the 70s before that.
Pretty unheard of,10 days below freezing in(Nov) a row-never seen
that before,I believe this event was reported to have been caused
by a large low merging with typhoon Nuri(?)and buckling the jet stream.
Range of temps at the airport -13F/46F,my yard was slightly better -8F/50F
I believe Feb avg temps were 7F/24F.

The Princeps does have a little spear damage,it looks like it just got
the smaller of the spear leaves all the way through..should grow out without pull.
The cold came so early this fall that some of the smaller palms were caught out
and are damaged,I think all the bigger ones are fine-the Armata was/is a smaller palm.
My Licuala are both gone now as the L.Ramsayi pulled a few days ago-leaving them in
the house last winter(while I was in Az)was their undoing-I had the heat set at 50F,
maybe less-just to cold for them to survive-I did see the white spider mites finally
be kept in check with the cold temps I have been using tabaco on some of the
smaller palms to kill the WSM,seems to have worked well!

We hit -21C (if I recall correctly) once or twice in November and -19C in December.
Seldom above zero, even when close to it.
But the day 2 feet of snow arrived all at once, I think, suffocated everything, breaking the little Euro's stem.
No big deal, I have more
Jim, yeah that Princeps will bounce back like the winner it is.
Darn it about the Licualas, yup 50F is way too cold.
Had to laugh at your mention of tobacco...I drowned two Calamondin orange plants when they were hit with bugs.
In buckets full of cigarette butts.
Good luck with the spider mites.
