No complaints

Post by TerdalFarm » Thu Dec 11, 2014 11:17 am

The northern Oregon coast set a record high for the date yesterday, of 63 oF. Manzanita got to 64 oF!
Strong winds, heavy rain as part of the "pineapple express" bringing tropical weather. I'm sure my palms love it, esp. as this is about the time last when when there were record lows.

Oklahoma mild as well. Forecast to set some record high lows this weekend. My smaller potted palms are all outside. May make it to the end of the year.

That's awesome... send some pics! A small El nino sure helps, in fact, that warm pacific air is working it's way across the Country to the East coast. It's supposed to warm up starting this weekend out here. What a contrast, 'so far... over last year. (fingers crossed)

905, I wasn't there; in OK now, where this comes in over the next couple of days.

I found this photo online from the mountain above where my Manzanita palm garden is and it will give you a sense:

Having grown up in Vancouver, I recognized those Oregon raindrops
Incredible amount of rain on the wet coast in the last 3 weeks.

Nice and mild here, hoping for a blanket of snow to ward off a green Christmas.

Looks like my potted palms (well, cold-hardy species, not bottles etc.) might be out until the New Year.
Long-term forecasts for January call for colder than normal, but December has been delightful in Oklahoma. Well, for an Oregon boy: cloudy, light rain, temps just above freezing.

Enjoy, guys !!!!
Yeah, that was a wicked cold spell in November, we had it too.
And another very cold blast on its way for us right after Christmas. BRRR.

One cold week in November then one cold week in December...not bad.

And then the days start to get longer...

HA ! Hope you r right Paul  ....for those interrested, i left a Sabal minor in pot outside during 2 weeks with temp. below freezing during the night and maybe 2-3 days above 0c during the day. The soil in the pot were completely frozen ( hard). I bring the palm inside when i came back from vacation, and now it look s great. No dammage at all.
So, 2 weeks under freezing mark ( 2c to -14c) and it looks good  ...

Same here, not much sun at all in fact... We have been very lucky so far, however, we are expecting 'Santabomb' on Christmas day... Could be tons of rain (Oregon style) or a huge dumping of shnay (Quebec style). Won't matter, we leave the lawnmower out as a Christmas tradition around here.

Barb, I picked up a CIDP, 1 gal pot back in Oct from a local nursery here. Rare they are yes, but not sure if I should plant it in the Spring or let it mature indoors....

shnay
good one

a 1 gal pot CIDP might be happy in pot(s) for a few years, say, until it's a 5 gallon.
Mine did best in the hottest windiest spot, with lots of water.
It actually lived in pots for probably 30+ years, finally ending up in a plastic garbage can with tons of drain holes drilled in the bottom.
They don't mind root pruning, either. Several times I've cut half its roots off just to get it out of/into pots.

I never see CIDPs in nurseries here.
Maybe baby it for a few years before planting out.

I lost newly in the ground CIDP in Manzanita, Oregon, to the cold last winter. Growing up another in a pot in Oklahoma. It is still outside in Oklahoma! Yes, no complaints about the weather.

Yeah, that was a shame Erik...kind of surprised me actually.
Especially when your Shaving Brush palm made it (which is good).
But I would've bet money that CIDP would survive what Shaving Brush would not.

IMO, always a good idea to keep plants in a pot, and move to larger pot(s), for a few years before they're planted out.
More roots, etc. mean better chance of survival, if winter protection is sufficient.

I know little about the shaving brush palms, and my internet research suggests that no one else does, either.
It was NOT foliage hardy! But recovered well. So, perhaps they are a tiny bit more cold hardy that appreciated.

Thanks Barb, I will do just that. Only problem is, if I have transplant into a garbage can, my wife will haul it to the curb... I remember seeing your pics of your CIDP, and the root system was incredible.

Almost all of the nurseries around here have no idea what to stock, in fact, the Needles and odd CIDP I've seen, are being sold as houseplants, albeit in blue pots...

Another nursery closer to Toronto claims to have the best palm selection, when they are not even remotely hardy to say the least... I suppose there's not a very big market for what we do.

That's many years away for a CIDP which have a huge amount of fleshy roots.
Mine had been going into serious decline for years and was barely hanging on.
suppose there's not a very big market for what we do.
Yeah, isn't that the truth!
We're a pretty small group of hobbyists, especially in Canada.
The "buyers" of those nurseries and stores simply haven't a clue.
Plus they're probably tired of people bringing a dead palm back after winter, wanting a refund.

What Nursery is that? Just curious.

There's a nursery out by me they have tons of cacti but its all of inside according to them even the Agave Parryi they just sat its all indoor stuff. However we know better... They have a few palms but mostly indoor stuff. Cheap Xmas palms and the like. My xmas palm I've grown from seeds are doing quite well they started growing their mature fronds (not little strap leaves) over the summer and and are starting look great. My trick this winter was I got a couple 4 foot kiddie pools and throw all my pots in the pool and I just toss in a bit of water once a week and under a grow light every thing seems really happy. Been busy with all sorts of stuff and as long as I toss in a bit of water they thrive on the neglect.

Hey Tim, that's a great idea with the kiddie pool.
Besides the fact that it creates interest over the winter by monitoring growth patterns and behaviour etc.

I was referring to Valleyview mostly and maybe Humber.
Valleyview does get large washies and the odd super large Bizzy, the rest are Roebeleniis, majesties, bottles...exotics Usually for office buildings and malls.
Humber will get small juvenile windmills from time to time, but still sell them overpriced as an indoor.

One way to tell if their stuff is overpriced, is by pricing a standard musa basjoo. If they are double what you would pay, chances are they are over priced. Then again, I'm like that with everything.
Bieng from Quebec originally, I refuse to buy beer in Ontario.. Lol

Canadian tire thought I was nuts buying kiddie pools in October. It was the only way I could think of keeping stuff watered while I was in Mexico for 2.5 weeks. Even then by the time I was home the plants drank the 40l of water I put in for them. It's nice I don't have to water everything individually just dump in 25l in every 7-10 days everything seems happy. I'll grab a picture of them hanging out in the pool ;)

Nice pic, Erik.
Arctic air is coming next week.
Ours is starting in a day or two.

We got some snow after all on Christmas Eve, everything looked so beautiful Christmas morning.
Snowing all day today, 4 or 5 inches on the ground.

No complaints here yet either (beside November for that cold snap). Supposed to be 68 F here tomorrow, but a night in the low 20's this week! ugh!!!!! then will moderate again. Will it be a roller coaster winter?
