Palm planting #2

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

The trachy was planted 3 1/2 weeks ago. It looked lonely all by itself so I planted 3 needle palms and 2 W.filifera to keep it company. :)

Maccario I grew the W.filifera from seed. They are 1 year 8 months old. They should really put some growth on this year.

They look great. I hope that my W. filifera look as good this fall when they are the same age as yours.

W. filifera & Robusta both like heavy fertilization & lots of water. When they are in the ground it is really hard to over do it. They will put on some very nice growth this summer if you keep up with them. They look great !

Fertilizer

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Allen they really take off after they get a larger trunk. Laaz they all get a b1 vitamin called thrive alive ,also a regular fertilizing regiment. They are bullet proof to grow.

Beautiful, John,

I've got some Thrive Alive and Superthrive, afraid to use it because I know so little about the stuff.
I thought it was chiefly a transplant aid...some of the marketing statements said palms treated with Thrive lasted NINE months out of soil because of it!

What's your fav fertilizer for palms?

Great stuff

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Barb the thrive alive and super thrive are for strong roots. Strong roots and well draining soil and thats 3/4 of the battle. I give my palms 1 table spoon of epsom salts per gal of water every spring greens them up real well. They then get regular feedings of fertilizer with trace elements ,so important in my opinion. Follow the directions on the bottle.

Thanks for the advice. I'll use them...they weren't cheap and they've been sitting on the shelf for several years.
You folks are taking the guesswork out of caring for my plants, and I'm grateful.

Tulum

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Wes I`ve been to the caribean side of Mexico a few times and I always find a way to go to Tulum and the Mayan ruins. The beach there is spectacular. Great you were able to get those seeds through. I had all my seeds confiscated in Jan. by the keystone customs people.

Tulum is awesome and yes the beach is amazing. I swam in it for about a half hour.

I have also been to the Coba riuns and they are spectacular.

Wes it took the customs Gal about 20 minutes just to look up palm seeds in "restricted items" she found in my luggage. She then said that I wasn`t allowed to take them with me. I was told not to try it again ,and let through. I think I`ll just find a better way of hiding my seeds next time LOL

I wish Customs had been that diligent with alfalfa seed from Europe 50 years ago...then we wouldn't have Spotted and Diffuse Knapweed all over the bloody place.

They really overdo the power thingy, don't they?
Did they tell you the "penalty" for "doing it again"?
It's probably a stiffer sentence than bank robbers receive...

As though there'll suddenly be
UNWANTED palms springing up all over British Columbia's grasslands and roadsides.
Duh! That would be a shame.
Barb

Ps--wouldn't it be fun to find that dumpster that Customs throws all the "contraband" into? I'd be a dumpster diver for those seeds!.

Another thought...wonder if THEY share???
I can see the headlines now:

"...found at the home were rare palms in various stages of growth, and a myriad of items ranging from Gucci handbags to Pawlonia seeds". Hang 'em high!

Palm seeds

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Barb your hillarious! Got a good laugh from your last post. I don`t know what the penalty would be didn`t ask at the time. I bet half the plane was bring more stuff back than they declared. I still have lots of seed from previous trips so I didn`t mind to much. If you are interested I could send you some W. robusta seed I have lots of. Send me a PM if you want some.
