Post Palms and exotics from England.
Think I the original post may be in the wrong section, apologies.
Hi, I'm a new member and thought I'd share a few slide shows of the palms and exotics in England. The first is in Torquay in the southwest, ay 50.4 degrees north, its pretty mild and moderated by the Atlantic and southwest airflow for most of the time. The second is on the Wirral in northwest England at 53.3 degrees north, still some big suprises. The last 2 is of my garden in Cheshire 53.2 degrees north but more inland, from summer 2013. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQ0gI0OdsBg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJsuMKwDVMs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hb-AxqZcwc

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Welcome aboard PN, John!
I'm speechless with envy at your area's zone.
All the palms--heck, ALL the plants--that I love.
Yup, that CIDP is jaw-dropping beautiful.
The bougainvilleas..congrats on those, and the figs!
Great back yard retreat, how lovely.
Everything in the greenhouse looks fabulous.
You must spend many many happy hours out there.
I certainly would.
Looking forward to having your participation here.
And help

This site may help a bit, but it's when flowers are fully open that it's a bit easier to tell.
If you have "known" male and female trees, the males always flower first.
But obviously if you have only one, there's nothing to compare it with.

A short video from BananaJoe doesn't have flowers in full bloom but is interesting nevertheless:

I'm not sure if that applies to Chamaerops as it does for Traccies? I'll update once the flowers open up, its been wet and cool the last 2 days, we need some more sun!lucky1 wrote:This site may help a bit, but it's when flowers are fully open that it's a bit easier to tell.

Nor do I.
Phoenix for instance are dioecious, having male and female on separate plants.
"The date palm is dioecious, having separate male and female plants"
from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_palm
Can't find my link to the palms list.

Garden update June 2014
I thought I would share some pictures of the garden from today as the sun has decided to make an appearance and it put me in the mood for some gardening, just cutting the lawn and a bit of tidying and pruning. Today is a world away from friday and saturday, where the sun failed to show its face and maximum temperatures were only 15c. Hope you like the pictures!

Lovely indeed.
Glad the weather has improved.
Getting so hot and dry here I'm ready for a trip to England.

It was 25.8c on Monday, which is pretty good for here! Down to 20.7c today but still okay and much better from last week!lucky1 wrote:Lovely indeed.

It certainly is a heatwave for your area.was 25.8c on Monday, which is pretty good for here
Bet your lovely specimens are loving that.
We had 34C here yesterday and the entire month of July looks to be 30+C
Shoes almost melted.

I like the warmth but 25c is enough for me and any higher and the watering that is needed takes too long as I don't and can't afford to use a hosepipe.lucky1 wrote:It certainly is a heatwave for your area.was 25.8c on Monday, which is pretty good for here

Agree that 25C is perfect.I don't and can't afford to use a hosepipe.
You must have the same bureaucrats that gouge you on water charge as we do.
Horrible prices the last few years.
Most of it goes to their wages.
I'd better not get started on that wailing...*grin*

Started planted a garden on a newly gotten land plot. Many ornamental shrabs and trees already planted there. Potato, tomato, peper and etc are an asset. Pics a little bit later. A lot of water is needed - plus 37C is a temp. record so far. A little money to pay for watering.... Bad news - winters are badly cold here. No palms anymore .

That's incredibly hot, Igor.
Nice that your water isn't expensive.
Congrats on the new plot; bet your Mom is looking forward to filling it with seedlings next spring.
Look forward to seeing the new place.

Barb, my Mom does... Every f...g day. That's why I'm very angry on her - hot and age. By the way we started picking up and sharing through the relatives and the friends tomatos and sweet papers from the new plot. Thanks to my Mom (seeds sowed on a middle of January) and to the hot... And thanks to my seasonal worker...
