Keith, that's absolutely FABULOUS :bounce:

I like the size, some are so darn narrow you can't swing a cat in there.
Good work.

My wife and I got siding on 3 sides, we installed 3 smaller windows, got the skylight framed ( thanks to my brother). Tomorrow will finish shingles on roof and install skylight ( hopefully).

Thanks Barb . The south face is going to be a 5 by 10 foot insulated window i got free from my brother at a construction job. I am also putting a skylight on the south roof ( left on the picture ) . I am going to have to sacrifice some light for a more insulated greenhouse.

sacrifice some light
Light is easy to add, lots of full spectrum bulb choices.
And your plants will show whether or not you've added enough.

I bet you can't wait to get your benches constructed.

Do you remember seeing wxman's GH?
He has a couple of water-filled barrels beneath the shelf.

greenhouse update

Post by hasty22 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 5:35 pm

Hello. I finished most of the siding except for up top at trusses, will do that tomorrow, also got the big 5 by 10 window in on the south side . Got all the shingles done and flashing around skylight done. Skylight is installed. Steel insulated door got installed (thanks to my brother). I installed the locks ( to guard my precious plants lol). Today I put crusher chips inside and leveled floor.

<a href="http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/khast ... 0.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b54 ... f41230.jpg" border="0" alt="new garden shed / greenhouse photo DSCF3105_zpsf0f41230.jpg"/></a>

This is the big 5ft by 10ft window I installed ( window was free) Yes I know I need to get the windex out.

<a href="http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/khast ... d.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b54 ... 3428ed.jpg" border="0" alt="big window photo DSCF3106_zps463428ed.jpg"/></a>

Lots of empty space. Tomorrow I am hoping to put all my plants from the house into the new greenhouse until it is warm enough to leave outside. This will let me see how much room I have and where I need to put lights and electrical outlets.

Keith, wow, great job.

And as you said earlier, it's easier to provide extra light than the right temperature if it's not insulated.
Great size window.
Just think how much light will get in there when the sun is lower during winter. :D

It'll be fun loading that with your plants.
Run...if it's snowing again.

Let's hope this s**t weather ends soon.

Keith, well done! More insulation planning? And what kind of heating you are going to use?

thanks guys. Yes Igor I plan on insulating it fully after I run a few wires for plug ins and lighting. I will then put the same siding on the inside. The ceiling will be insulated with a air gap above the insulation. As for heat I was thinking a 500w base board heater or 2 of them. I will be installing 4 solar panels on the roof, for a total of 500watts. Hopefully this will run all the lights and water pump and some of the heat. will have a baseboard heater on backup power.

Yes Barb I hope the weather warms up. My magnolia tree out front is in full bloom and last nights frost turned some blooms a little brown, not to bad though.

Solar panels are a great idea, Keith.
Will be interesting to hear how much electrical know-how is involved.

At our location, we're always a couple of degrees colder than your spot in the city, Keith.
Things have taken a beating here from the temp drop.

Keith, it is good idea about solar panels. But do you have enough room for the storage batteries?

Thanks Barb . Yes the weather sucks mainly the overnight lows. They are calling for -2 C on Sunday night. All the plants I had in the house are temporarily in the greenhouse till the weather improves. I have to keep covering up the musa basjoo and it does not like that.

<a href="http://s1291.photobucket.com/user/khast ... e.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1291.photobucket.com/albums/b54 ... 1f445e.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSCF3126_zpsf61f445e.jpg"/></a>

Also Igor I would build a small covered well ventilated battery storage behind greenhouse and run short cables thru wall to inverter.

Keith,

That big window is wonderful :D
Perfect spot for those shelves, and good timing for your seedlings getting more light.

You've got more room in there
Nice to have the house empty, I bet.

Tell your brother to take photos of you insulating the walls around the plants.
  :laughing3:

Yeah...Sunday night.

Hello update on greenhouse. We got the siding all done and painted. Trim is up. My brother got the soffit done on both sides today and started on the the front. This is great cause no bugs can get in now. I also got a new firepit cause old one rusted out at bottom.

greenhouse update

Post by hasty22 » Sat Sep 28, 2013 2:06 pm

Hello. Started to bring plants into greenhouse at end of September. Got alot of seedlings started over summer. I am also trying a vertical hydroponic system in greenhouse, should be up and running within a week. This is my first attempt at hydroponics. The pvc system will be mainly for lettuce, herbs, greens. Will also do 5 gallon bucket systems for tomato, cuke and pepper. Brought 3 types of banana plants in for winter , have not had much luck overwintering my musa basjoo plants in the house, maybe the greenhouse will do better. I will be digging up my other tropicals that I am not leaving in the ground this week.

Fun hauling everything inside and arranging it, isn't it Keith?
You sure did start a lot of stuff this year.

Fall sure is off to a fast/cool start for us.
Like a curtain dropping.

The hydroponics will help with humidity levels in there too.

Pea gravel floor is a great idea.

Update Dec 06, 2013: It is cold outside down to -17 C tonight which is way below normal. Although most of North America is well below normal. It is nice to go into greenhouse where it is warm.I keep the greenhouse around 19C, I had trouble keeping humidity levels in check. I had humidity in the 70's so I increased temperature from 16C to 19C which dropped it into the 60's. I then shut of the hydroponics till march except for the tomato 5gal bucket. With the cooler temperatures the humidity is in the 50's which is where I would like to keep it. I found germinating seeds in the greenhouse extremely easy in July and August when temperatures where around 40C in greenhouse. I had tried germinating seeds in the middle of winter, around the first of Jan ( when we are all bored) I put them in ziploc bags and put them in a warm spot above fridge. Then you wait weeks and months with little results. In the greenhouse I had lots of palm, cactus, agave, yucca and banana sprout within a week or sometimes less at temp. around 40C. Also heat pad and ziploc bag worked very well as well. Here are a few photos.

Nice set up Keith, and you did a lot to finish the inside.
Yes, germinating plants works so much better when it's really warm...I always germinated stuff beside the woodstove in the basement.

Good work on germinating the palms and agaves. :D
Exciting to have citrus, well done.

Our lack of sunshine isn't affecting your plants obviously, so you've got the lighting close to perfect.
Tomatoes always get tall, leggy, spindly grown indoors.
I had a tomato plant 6 feet tall when I tried it  stem wasn't much larger than spaghetti.

Thanks for pics.
Stay warm

Hi Keith,
Not sure, but maybe it's Red Sister: https://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&site ... 15_LTVN3fg
It's a beauty.

Nice to get everything outside.
Bet that was fun...
Stuff looks good.

Thats really nice ....

From the outside it looks like to little glass to be a greenhouse
but from the inside it looks more like a greenhouse than a house....

I would love to live in a larger version of your set up as my main house...
maybe wouldn't even need to go outside again

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.
