Minimum soil temps for planting cold hardy palms?

Post by sashaeffer » Thu Mar 27, 2014 5:36 am

Anxious like everyone else in getting some cold hardy palms in the ground and was curious from any experts on here if there is a minimum soil temp before planting in the ground. Currently for my area and through the University of Nebraska soil temp is 38F

I can be patient, but want new outdoor palms to have maximum time in the ground this growing season for better winter hardiness.

The roots will grow the fastest when soil temps are over 50,
they can be stunted by cold soil and rot in cold wet soil-if the plants
are outside already the soil should provide more consistant temps...
just lay off watering until the spring weather arrives for good.

Thanks Jim always appreciate your advice since we share time zone. I don't have anything planted yet all still in pots or not ordered yet.

Jim, do you have a regular Pindo in the ground that you protect?t

I can't wait to find a freaking palm to buy so I can plant it when it does warm up. Much less just worry about when to plant. Seems like this yr ain't nobody got any palms yet. Not sure whats going on around here.

I know growers in the South East took quite a hit on stuff they had with the cold and snow storms they had. Will make prices jump on what is left I'm sure.

Beautiful! pictures ARE worth a 1,000 words.

Guess Steve Anderson has quite a few, and he sells some great stuff just have to see what sizes he has to choose from.

Thanks.

Jim, do you protect that like your other palms? cage, wrap and Christmas lights? How long in the ground like that?
