could my trachycarpus have survived-16

I only had some clear plastic to cover it. I tried to pull the spear and it didn't

It might take a few days for the spear to pull. Try again in a couple of days. How long was it exposed to -16 for?

When you're above 0 (freezing) give it a treatment with a fungicide just in case it is alive. -16F is probably going to be lethal (depending on duration establishment, etc), -16C is survivable but almost certainly would cause a lot of damage. If it saw anything like -16F in or near the meristem there won't be much (any?) living tissue.

Paul and Teebee are bang on. Too early to tell now. First aid is HP, then proceed with fungicide a day after. Keep the spear dry.

Considering your zone, -16F and the winter we(you) have had. Without an insulated box with lights or heat I fear it never had a chance.

Best thing you can do is start cutting accross on the trunk and see if the tissue is alive.

Spear pull is not necessarily an indicator of death; a spear can pull and the palm survive, or the spear can remain intact and that palm can be dead... The latter is found often if the plam freeze-dries or if it dies of drought...
