Christmas update 2013
After 2 very mild winters looks like this one came in fast and well before any palms had stopped growing. Even with covering my marginal palms I already have losses. My CIPD. robusta, and hesper palm are done for. My Trachy Takil is taking a beating but still hanging in there.
<a href="http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/chade ... 3.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc3 ... 134013.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20131223_134013.jpg"/></a>
This pindo looks perfect with only a frost cloth over it.
<a href="http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/chade ... 9.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc3 ... 120059.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20131223_120059.jpg"/></a>
Needle palm always looks perfect.
<a href="http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/chade ... 2.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc3 ... 115422.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20131223_115422.jpg"/></a>
Chammy under the tarp still looking good.<a href="http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/chade ... 1.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc3 ... 115331.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20131223_115331.jpg"/></a>
Notice the ferns are not defoliated. This side of the house I would rate a zone 8, a very nice microclimate.
<a href="http://s1209.photobucket.com/user/chade ... 7.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1209.photobucket.com/albums/cc3 ... 114937.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20131223_114937.jpg"/></a>
Even though this is the same side of the house this robusta is barely hanging on.

So you lost a Blue Hesper Palm? was it in the ground? and how cold did it get there?
Did the Hesper turn brown?(asking for a reason)

I was asking because like you we in Omaha got surprised by a sudden cold snap. We were going out of town but when I checked predicted lows forecast said low 20's so left potted Mexican Fan Palms (5) CIDP's (30) European Fan Palms(2) and 1 Blue Hesper Palm all outside. It got to 9F one night
Mexican's all torched brown fronds etc, but no spear pull...so far.
European Fan Palms...untouched.
CIDP's....Fronds slowly turned color, but not brown...more like dull green. No spear pull so far.
Blue Hesper..looks untouched but don't know how it doesn't show damage. Wasn't sitting next to house either, more out in the open so we'll see.
All are in garage now for the winter that I can heat if need be. It's been a tough winter as far as cold this year. Typically December isn't too bad around here. If they all make it, I hope it "toughens them up"
Pissed that I trusted the forecast like I did. Could have put them all in garage.

I guess mine are not as hardy, my robusta against the house should not be showing any damage. The Hesper was a small one gallon palm from ebay. About 4" of trunk, my bad for planting it so small. I have a pindo that got trunk cut last spring, it should be ready to fill in a spot along with the other princep.

Yea, maybe that is the difference. My Blue Hesper was a 5 gallon I got from Jungle Music and in a 20+ gallon tub. May have helped.

Butia looks perfect. Maybe is too wet Autumn and Winter with cold snaps for your Brahea armata. I cover my Brahea armata and Butia odorata against rain since mid October to prevent rotting spears. Thanks for sharing pictures.

Qestion were are you buying the Burminghams Palmettos? Besides Chilly Palms.
Nobody panics when people plant normal trees because its part of the plan... if someone plants a Palm EVERYONE LOSES THERE MINDS!

Trithrinax is a very hardy palm...I had one hang on for a few years as a small plant...
just to much accumulated damage at to small/to slow a growth rate, they need to be
dry top to bottom though.
Princeps is a beauty, glad you are protecting the other one!

IPN, I bought all 3 from different places. Chilly palms, yuccado and Plants Delight. Plan on stopping by and seeing Gary in Feb. but now I believe I really want 2, 7 gallon Brazorias instead of more Birminghams.
Jim been looking at those on ebay but they seem to grow as slow as a needles. And the larger 5 gallon ones look more like a 2 gallon palm with a 15 gallon price.

I just got a small one for the same reason. Price vs. size is not a good look. Phil out at Jungle music offered me a good deal on a 5g large one but shipping was murder. I went with the smaller and I'll see if it makes it. we are in a much warmer zone compared to most of the board so we might have better luck with them. Won't speed em up any but they might survive a bit better.chadec wrote:IPN, I bought all 3 from different places. Chilly palms, yuccado and Plants Delight. I have a "silver" med that is growing insanely fast..but it looks more white than silver. I have heard "silver" and "cerifera" used interchangeably but the ones I have seen over seas labled "cerifera" are VERY blue with the white powder coating and look fantastic. what type do you have? sad to hear about the hesper, was going to try one myself but I don't think I will now if yours has gone already I know it won't last here with out heat..which Im not up for that right now. Have you tried a Mazari yet? that was my other marginal on the listchadec wrote:Mike, I think they will do fine in our zone. I just dont want to wait for ever for a decent sized one. Hopefully my silver med will start putting on size and I will just replace these marginal palms with minors.

Good to see the healthy Pindo under the tarp, very impressive.
The losses suck, Chad, had expected CIDP to be a tad better at early cold, but the Armata needs a particularly long warm Fall.
When did you fertilize this summer? any chance it was a bit too late?
Sabals and Needle look good.
And the Princeps inside is a beauty.
Thanks for the pics.

I did get this one from palmswholesale. As far as palms go it is healthy and seems to be in very good condition. It was packed well and shipping was really fast..down side is I should have spent the money and got a bigger one..It is more green than blue but hoping the color comes out once it gets older..this big and 5 years old..I think I got awhile

Hint when doing business with Paul at Palmswholesale....
If you want a larger palm than you see advertised you can look at his link "large landscape palms". Larger varieties of what he sells ..even if they stay small...are listed there. I mistakenly thought it was only palms that grew massive outside, but he has indoor palms there as well that tend to stay smaller, so are almost at specimen size to sell.
or
Ask him if he has anything bigger. That is what I've done. He sometimes has a much larger version of what your looking for and it's not listed on his Ebay store page.
If your ever wanting a really great looking indoor palm that has steady growth? can't go wrong with his Lytocaryum weddellianum Mini Coconut Palm. Very soft fronds, steady grower, very easy inside the house.

I don't fert after middle of July for that very reason, but water like crazy until early Sept.I didnt use any fert after Aug. But our first freeze came very early and caught everything of guard
We've had nasty cold early October some years.
This year October was fabulous and mild.
November was a killer as soon as calendar page was turned.

Phil had a super nice 5 gallon multi trunked he offered me but with shipping and all it was well over 100 bucks and I just wasn't up for it right now..maybe in the future. You really should get you one so we can see how they take this zone.chadec wrote:Very nice palm. Yes it will turn turn blue with age. He does have a 5 gallon listed on his page for 60 $. But it doesnt look too big to me. More like a 1 gallon palm and for the money! Oh hell, its only money right.

Yea, when I stopped in at Phil place in October I was thankful that I only had a rental car because I was a kid in a candy store....
I still picked out some smaller stuff to have him ship back...but the larger varieties of what I bought were sure tempting.
In May I have to go to San Diego again, this time I'll be driving and taking my truck!

I don't know what the "normal" weather is like in your area, Chad.think I will be hardening off my plants earlier now on
But here, it seems my palms are slow to start in spring.
By end of Summer they really start to take off
Wow, that's $$$$$$$$.palm was 75$ the order cost 180$ with shipping and phyto cert
Didn't know state-to-state (USA) orders needed phytos, thought that was only for cross international shipments.

I really like Trithrinax and the Mazari palm, unfortunately they do not like being covered in a moist cool environment....
I think a better substitute is the highly underrated Chamaerops Cerifera, even the small one I have has never had a true spear-pull....
always impressive to see a small palm still ticking while the heads of almost every other palm are within mulching distance.
