Still waiting for the first snow here in Crackton
So are we Paul.

I should've been dreading COLD, not the snow.
Not a flake landed.

Barometer's almost on TILT: "very dry" :|

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Hi Aaron.....your yard looks like it has a LOT OF WIND! Any plant which survives your yard is hardy in my opinion. 8)

Aaron, wow, haven't seen a shot from that angle before.
You've done so much to define the outdoor spaces...very very nice.

Obviously a labour of love.

Yup, can imagine the wind howling there.
But the open skies are worth it.

It does in the winter and spring, hard too keep branches on the trees from all growing on one side. The wind has caused a death or here in the garden. Because of the protection in town, somethings grow there that I can't seem too grow out here. Like pumpas grass. :x

We got some last night too, not quite as much as Adam shows, but close.

My place in Sydenham got NAILED though, snow day for those lucky bunch.

You can see my Miscanthus bent to the ground in this one:

And to the right here you, of course, see a lovely Magnolia grandiflora 'Edith Bogue' all wrapped up for a zone 4 winter!

Usually I'm in the snow belt. Glad to see I only have a scuff of snow vs. Adam. But Adam will have the last laugh when his palm huts come down 3-4 weeks before mine and go up 3-4 weeks after mine...

Could it be you need 2 to get fruit?
I'll watch its development with interest.

Looks like you've selected a good spot for it...probably grow there but not here.

Good one, Mike!

We'll have some spare cold for you starting Monday when an Arctic outflow hits us.
This one'll be bad, from early reports.

Happy Thanksgiving to our U.S. friends!

As you sit down to that turkey dinner, remember "once on the lips, forever on the hips". :bootyshake:

Hey Igor... what crazy weather you are having...freezing recently and now 9C/48F at 3 am... positively tropical
No snow for me yet either. Lowest temp so far is -3.5C. Abutilons still flowering as are the Hebes. Musas browned off and Tetrapanax leaves sulking. No seriously cold weather expected until a week Saturday. One of our sensationalist papers the Daily Express has forecast a three month freeze  http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/445766 ... ree-months

Ski resorts haven't opened this early in 25 years!

Post by seedscanada » Fri Nov 29, 2013 3:16 pm

In Southern Ontario and Western New York more than half a dozen ski resorts are opening today or tomorrow. It has been 25 years or more since a November opening day.

Igor and Andy, looks like the winter you had last year, we have this year?
We are talking about skiing tomorrow!

Mike, the nomad people in Kazakhstan prefer the horse, ship and cattle meat. Usually December is a month when Kazakh families slaught either one specially feed horse or cow which are a winter season food. In kazakh language it's called "sogim" - winter meat. Since I am not Kazakh but so called "Russian" - blue eyes, shaten hairs, our family is not a part of the nomad custom but I like buying and cooking the horse meat. Actually it is not a horse meat I had been buying in Italian traditional food stores in Toronto many years ago but something very special. As for hunting I'm not a fun neither of the hunting nor fishing. We have no rabbits in Kazakhstan but the bores, deers, wild goats and wild sheeps are the subjects of hunting in Kazakhstan.
By the way I am at 43.189574,76.915704 ... 1027.648 m / 3371.548 feet

Andy, Adam. Normally the winter starts in my area after December the 1st. And it STARTS... A lot of snow, some cold. But January is a realy winter month here. The coldest one. By the way Omaha, Nebraska has the same climate as my town has. We are might more snowy but absolutely windless...

Cute, Keith.
Let's hope some idiot doesn't come along and help himself to your presents.

Looks like you're all set for the cold that's coming.

Are you adding a light in your G'house for these dark gloomy days?

We spent the day skiing today!

Post by seedscanada » Sat Nov 30, 2013 10:46 pm

Barb, congrats on the first snow.

We skiied today in London, Ontario. About 175km west of us here... I didnt know they got pummelled with snow (52cm) last weekend.
Unbelievable lake effect snow quantities in that area.

It was nice to ski in November in Ontario at 3'c.
We skiied the woods, where there was still more than ten inches of powder, since it was opening day we made fresh tracks in the out-of-bounds... :) Way to teach my 5 year old on his first day, Adam!! Good times. Hope everyone that wants to, gets a chance to do the same this season.

Oh Keith, good palm wrap holiday disguises!

out-of-bounds.
...and we wonder how kids learn to ski "out of bounds"  their parents take 'em there.

Glad you had fun Adam, and your temps are still nice and mild.

OK...we've got snow this a.m.
Bah humbug.
Brutal cold arrives tomorrow

Thanks Barb and Adam. I am ready for the cooler weather, not saying I want the cooler weather, the heated huts seem to be plenty warm even with only 5 C9 lights per hut. Also Barb I have a goji berry plant I got berries first year but not last year. It is still alive and i do not cover over winter. I do not know if you need two or more plants to pollinate.

Yeah, Keith, I don't want the cold either

I didn't see Goji berry plants when Art Knapps was having their close-out sale.
Ended up buying a "hardy kiwi".
Glad to hear it can survive in the Okanagan.
I'll look for one in Spring.

Even this Sask Mongolian Goji seed seller doesn't say whether you need one or two plants.
But your fruit set is likely proof one is enough.

Get out the wool socks  here comes the Arctic air...BRRRRR. :verycold:
