Sabal Minor Mccurtain
I ordered a Sabal Minor McCurtain that's supposed to be shipped soon. It's only going to have strap leaves so I plan to keep it potted and indoors for awhile. I was just wandering if anyone else has had experience with them.
Jeff
I have one I left out (unheated),the lowest temp was -4F.
It did have a few pots over it...all the green was burned
but has come back nicely.

Erik, thanks for sharing. Interesting and rare rocky habitat for Sabal minor.

Maybe just lucky -but pretty tough and a nice recovery too for its size.

Mine small seedling has black stretch wrap on the soil surface, so it's almost constantly moist and it's growing happily and quite fast for a sabal, or maybe McCurtain is faster grower than regular sabal?

Here's my new Sabal Minor. Pretty small but I'm still excited about it.

Erik, is that northernmost Oklahoma Sabal minor habitat, Beavers Bend State Park? Nice to see they are doing great!TerdalFarm wrote:Henoh,
Yes, but there are several clumps, frutiing and growing, on higher and rockier terrain than this. Generally under trees birds use for roosting.

Nice long leaves already, Jeff.my new Sabal Minor.
Good that you watered it, looks a little wilted.
Great specimen.

Small?
No,not really.
That thing will be a monster...should start producing divided leaves real soon.

Thanks Barb. I was wandering if it was wilted or not. It still looks that way. I wonder if that's because it had been sitting out in the sun in a FedEx box for a few hours before I got home? Should it be perking up by now?

Yup, I'd keep it well watered each day.
It'll perk up nicely.
Those nice strap leaves will be standing up in no time.
Keep an eye on it; maybe gently repot it into a pot only an inch or two wider/taller than its current pot.
Use decent soil.
Its existing soil might be shedding water down the sides of the pot if soil is mostly clay.
Barb
EDIT; sabals like to be near water, some even in swamps as Erik has proven.
They can handle all the water you give them.
I wouldn't let a Sabal dry out.
Mine stopped growing when I neglected them...basically stalled for a couple of years.

Henoh,
I believe so. I was shown this population by Dr. Chris Butler who did the most recent study on their distribution (his paper easily found by Google).
Barb,
yes, I have not been able to kill mine with too much water! And yes, most in wild are in swampy habitats. BUT, we alfind them in uploand rocky habitats. A tough palm, all around.

Barb, that's why I wrapped it, so it's constantly moist, but only in summer, when it's hot. Don't need any mold there.lucky1 wrote: EDIT; sabals like to be near water, some even in swamps as Erik has proven.

I can't imagine those leaves are normal for McCurtain.
More than likely it was grown packed in with other palms
with indirect, filtered light-possibly shaded by other plants
with plenty of heat and water...although I think the overall
shape is right.
Heres a link to more pics...unfortunately Erik is in most of them

I've got 3 or 4 little Sabals, slow as slugs, grew a bit faster when I increased watering.
Some grew only 1 leaf a year for 5 years.
Other folks seem to have much more luck with Sabals.

My small McCurtin that I got from Steve Anderson is spending it's first winter in the ground with just this clear tote over it. No heat at all. We've had very abnormal cold here so far this winter and the other day I took a peek inside not knowing if it was going to be brown and burnt, and to my surprise it was just as green and healthy looking as the day I covered it.
Hope it stays that way....have 2 1/2 months to go at the earliest.
