I did notice 3 seedlings of a Castor Bean in the garden which I did not plant (seeds from last season). We are zone 6b so them seem 'hardy' in my area from seed.

Can't get over the length of those yucca spikes...wow
what a show is coming up!
agree with the sedum acre ID...we had it years ago, H was ticked off when it spread into the lawn.
So "acre" is a good name

Hi Henoh.............thanks for the ID..............someone sent me some cuttings years ago.
Hi Barb............those tall blooming Yuccas are Y. constricta x filamentosa. I can send you some seeds if interested. They do have awesome looking blooms since the gap between the top of leaves to bottom of bloom is so large.

We sure could use some of that rain, My texas horse mint looks like someone sprayed it with round-up in the heat.

Yes, and later that day the weather sticker showed 105f, but our official high was 103f. My porch is on the south side, so it collects heat from the walls and rocks. It would run about 6deg above the temp on the north side of the house. It is always hotter in the desert than in town. So to make a long story short I would say it was about 104-106f out here.lucky1 wrote:Your sticker shows 100F, Aaron.

My plants don't seem to liking the heat, the rocks around them are to hot to touch. They will be ok, but I think even the yuccas like it in the 90's f. I on the other hand don't mind the heat.

104 to 106 F ... OMG
...rocks too hot to touch.
Just imagine how they superheat the root surface of plants.
From the long-range, looks like the left half of NA is going to be hot all July.
After a rainy June many folks aren't yet acclimatized to summer.
Presto...summer is definitely here.
On a somber note, how very very sad about the loss of the 19 AZ firefighters.
Horrendous event.
How far from Yarrow are your friends living/your place?
Hope they're OK.

Just kidding.
Glad they're pushing ... still think mine are the slowest of our PN group this year.
Barefoot on the blacktop? never...even the dog goes around blacktop, staying on adjacent concrete.
Could feel the heat right through the soles of my shoes.
I'll take some pics of my yuccas when they're (finally) in full bloom.
Gotta look at the ones in town too; last time I didn't even see a spear shooting up.
Enjoy your cooldown, Aaron.
We're dropping a few degrees tomorrow and Friday too, thank goodness.

That'll be a bean forest.castors reseeded the next year...Jesus God! i have a thousand plants at least
Since we were (last year) talking about flowering plants, here are a couple of shots from today:
Paul's Scarlet Hawthorne is spectacular this year:
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/14267723414" title="013 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3754/142 ... 37e1f5.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="013"></a>
And my (ta da) many years ago Honeysuckle vine pruned into a standard is flowering nicely too.
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/14245000316" title="005 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3814/142 ... 7a46d4.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="005"></a>
Here's the honeysuckle's gnarly trunk, which took years of pinching buds to train into something resembling a trunk with bark.
The old cat used to sharpen its claws, tearing the bark to shreds. Fortunately the tree outlived the cat.
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/14245022886" title="008 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2939/142 ... 8b4ff0.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="008"></a>
