New Trachy for me...

Post by Beny » Sat May 25, 2013 5:15 am

Just got a new 8 feets tall Trachycarpus fortunei from Mike 2 weeks ago. I planted at the side of my house near the street. My oldest one , 8 feets tall too, have had a lot of damage du to the mummywrap last winter. But it s still alive. There s some pics of my new one :D

Look just like mine. Are you going to mummy wrap both again or come up with another way to overwinter them?

I will use the box method like i did last winter for my Chamaerops humilis and the 2 small Trachy i have since 2-3 years. I use this method at my Customer, and i did nt have any problem to protect Customer s palms. I had one fongus problem on a Trachy last winter. Cause when using the 2 inches stryrofoam box, i learned that we don t need to wrap the palm tree with an arbotex. That does nt let the palm to evacuate the evaporation if the palm tree is wrapped tight.
I will try the mummywrap again with the same Trachy than last winter. It suffered from the overheat. But it s still alive, it only have 3 leaves :( but still growing.

Ben,

How large are your boxes? Originally I made mine 4x4 and there is no problem with them. But this creates a problem with storing them in the winter. I'm thinking 2x2 would be enough, but this may create other problems. You have to tie them so they don't touch the boxes, also is 2x2 enough to protect the roots from freezing?

I was down at the home improvement store a couple days ago thinking the same thing. I am leaning to 4x4 as well. I was looking at making mine disassemble so they store flat in my garage somewhere (I was thinking one of those suspended for the ceiling shelves.) I know Mike just stores his outside. I'd only look at that as a last resort. On your box how thick did you make the styrofoam? Are you only doing styrofoam or are you doing styrofoam with a plywood skin? Still contemplating my options.

I used plywood and that's exactly where I stored them, above the garage door. No problem for one, but very quick they start to add up.

I'm thinking of using this in the future

reinforced with a 2x2 and Styrofoam inside.

Hey guy's, im doing a 2x2 stryrofoam box 2 inches. Stick with PL glue, no wood, only stryrofoam. Even if the palms touch the styrofoam, i did nt had any problem even at -30c outside. Thats good for Trachycarpus, Butia, Chamaerops humilis, Needle palm and Washingtonia. These are the palms tree i tried to protect for now and with that method its work well. No need to use Arbotex to wrap the palms with 2 inches styrofoam. Using 2 CFL 23 watts bulb pluged in a T3 Thermocube ( The CFL and T3 located at the top of the trunck, just below the foliage) and 1 12 foots heat cable from EASYHEAT with their own thermostat at the ground for the roots. And thats it. Mulch around the box 6 inches deep and 1 feet wide.
Hope it will help you till i find the good way for the mummywrapping method

I too keep looking for a box that makes sense financially and is easy to assemble and store. Now that I have some big boys in my back yard this is even more pressing. I would like to do something with styrofoam that is reinforced but I have such high winds I don't know now I could brace them. I did find on my small threes the last couple years that my 1-2 inch rock I have around them does seem to help with the warming as they warm up from my c-9 christmas tree light strand that I hang around the crown and the base.

Very nice looking palm. Must be nice not having to wait several years. If I get the chance I would love to grab some large palms.

Beny that is a really great looking Trachy. Nice stiff fronds on it. How much did you pay for that palm? That palm in Vancouver would easily be $700.00 and up.

I bought it from Mike, it was around 500$. I went to pick it up, so no transport fees.
