Livistona saribus ~ Taraw Palm

Post by Knnn » Tue Mar 20, 2007 3:46 pm

Should be as cold tolerant as it's cousin, the Chinese Fan Palm, ( L.chinensis )
Some more info here--> http://www.pacsoa.org.au/palms/Livistona/saribus.html

These seem to be easy germinators, a 1-3 day soak, 85* - 90*F heat in a sealed container will give results from two weeks onward.

Last batch of seeds.

And a couple weeks later........

This is a seedling from last Summer, these held up well in the GH over the Winter.

There are two forms of this palm. One, a green petiole form, the other red. The green petiole form is somewhat hardier, perhaps to somewhere around 20f - 22f for very brief periods.

Barrie - I am really starting to appreciate the Livistona's. I've overwatered, underwatered and kept them too cold - they just keep growing :lol:

Do you have any of the green form planted out yet?

Steve ...
I have about 3 or 4 of the seed grown 'green form' in gallon pots. I'm a little reluctant to plant one out as most winters my temps dip below -5c (23f) for short periods ... cold enough to kill one. If I think of it I'll post a pic later.

Cheers, Barrie.

Steve - I'm with you on the appreciation for the Livistonia family. I have two very healthy and very large Liv Chinensis that are as happy inside in the winter as they are outside in summer. They are not fussy and they are very easy to care for. A big thumbs up.

Would you not rate the l.chinensis hardier than washingtonia robusta or p. canariensis?
I have thought of planting one but I am not sure that I cound protect it enough.
