Uncovered my Windmill Palms today!

Post by wxman »

Well, it's Palm Sunday and being busy next weekend, I decided to uncover my palms today. It's not ideal out -- 33F and snowing, but what the heck -- they're trachys!!! Forecast is for 30s early this week, warming to near 50F by next weekend, so all should be OK!

Just before I started.

Image

Insulation and front panel off. Looking good so far!

Image

Here's the other.

Image

My friend, Steve, and daughter, Charla, posing by my biggest trachy. He did a similar pose last fall before I boxed it up! The fronds are just BEGGING to be cut loose!

Image

Here's the other.

Image

Yes!!! Set free finally!

Image

The other one!

Both in the same shot!

Wow! They look super. In fact, better then the ones in Texas right now that were uncovered through a mild winter.

Good job...the box method works always well for me too. I tried the mummywrap technique this winter. There s what my biggest Trachy looks after uncovered it. It suffered a few burns tips du to the overheat from the heatcable, i just changed the cable last week by another one smaller. We had a bad winter with a lots of night under -25c or -15F. That Trachy has survived 2 winter with new methods i tried and he survived with damage every years  ...but thats the part of the game, we learn with experience :D .
There s few pics...

We still have a lot of snow as you can see...but its melting finally

They look great Tim!

Beny, that'll come back beautifully this year.
Doesn't look like you'll have any water restrictions this year...

We took my palm hut down today too, will untie it tomorrow.

Thx guy's, it will survive im sure of that, the palms are green. But its the second winter his experienting a new technique every winter. So, its a tough guy  ...Will uncover the others palms later on this week, but they look very better, cause they are in the box. Never had bad result with this method, but its for smaller palm. Me and Mike are working to find another way to protect big palms trees. Thats why i try the mummywrap.
I know this technique works well elsewhere. Just have to find the good way to do this..

What are the PALMS!
Hi Igor, so far the only palms uncovered by Wxman, Beny and me are Trachycarpus fortunei.

My Washies are still protected at night with C-9 lights and a thin plastic cover over the "teepee".
In the afternoon, with the sun (finally) shining on them, temp reads 34C.
The benefits of clear plastic. :D

Beny, thanks for explaining your experiments, it's really appreciated.

Thanks Keith, interesting how it makes ME feel good to uncover him.

Tavi, good idea to keep the Washies covered for now...mine still have the C-9 lights for overnight.
During the day, with only a small portion of plastic tied back, it's 37C in there.
Both my Washies have spears pushing, thankfully undamaged from all the mold.

I'll never use leaf-filled bags INSIDE the protection...far too much moisture that didn't vent.
But I like bags for the outside of the protection because they keep the root area "warmer".

Gonna leave the steel post in the ground, hoping he'll straighten up.
Haven't a clue why he's leaning.

Here are my windmill Palms... I know they don't look very good. My Inside Windmills are look better. However, am not showing off those Palms. maybe later.

I had this one in the ground for 1 3/4 years now. This one has mold on it I hope it lives. If not I'll just put a Sabal Birmingham where it is.

This Palm like the other one is heavily Defoliated. I seen some life in it still its a fighter.

Here are things getting better now oddly enough.

The best looking out of all of them.

Here s some bad result about my others ways for protecting palms. My biggest Needle palm was perfect 3 weeks ago, i uncovered it today with 2 other palms, and saw a lot of damages du to the excess of heat i think. There was only one 23 watts bulb always on inside a 3/4 inches styrofoam box. Next time i will use a thermocube, i think the heat was to high inside with the stronger sun at this time of the year.
Second, my Sabal minor has a lot of damage, i used only a pot with 1xC9 light always on inside (must use a styrofoam box next time).
Third one, my small Trachy with mummywrapping technique as had a fongus problem or suffered by the cold, cause the roof heatcable stoped working during the winter. But it will survive, the spear is green, will see later on.

One thing we really use is a thermostat inside a styrofoam box to prevent overheating especialy in spring. And for the mummywrapping method, better to use a Easyheat tape 18-24 feets long for a 8-12 feets palm is ok. My mistake was giving to much heat for what the tree really need.
Will have better results with the box. But thats the price to pay for experiencing  .....Will post a videos on Youtube soon...

Aw, Ben, that's sad.
We appreciate what you're sharing about what's not working.

I think any tight wrapping on any palm is trouble because of lack of air circulation, especially when they heat up late winter.

It costs more to heat the air inside a box/wider enclosure but IMO it's worth it.

Yeah, as much as the mummy wrapping looks easier, I think the box method is the safest to go. I'll still be boxing my trachys when they are 30' tall.

Don't tell my wife, however.

Yes , i know guy's. But the link a sent you last month about the guy who's doing mummywrapping in central Europe show a perfect result with the Trachy. So, if that guy was able to do that, why not us ? I saw in his video he made two hole in the arbotex and tarp at the middle of the trunck and one at the top. Thats maybe the solution for the ventilation. I sent it a message on Youtube and don't had any answer. Maybe he don't speak english.

http://youtu.be/Ya3XB9hlz4w

So, if somebody can translate what his saying, thats gonna give us the answer i think :?

the mummy wrap method looks easy......I guess the key is to keep the palm dry on the inside and to keep the sun from heating up the inside.

Im agree Tim, mine suffered from the excess of heat im pretty sure of that. First, i used a to strong heat cable. Second, i did not open the top untill spring arrived. Third, we ve had a cold winter, at least 6-8 night under -20c and one at -30c. I did not saw an excess of humidity inside, i dont think its a problem, but overheating the palm caused the problems ive got .
And yes its faster and easy to protect a palm with mummywrap....that take s 10 min to putting on and another 10 min to take it off....

Beny,

will mini Christmas lights work instead of a heating cable? The mini lights get warm but don't produce enough heat to get 'too hot'. They work down here in the tropics............not sure if they will work up in your area.

Palms are looking good people

Post by coconutmike »

Hi Barb your palm looks Great!! I love the slight lean it has, must be windy there.

Wxman- Does Not get any better than that absolutely beautiful

Beny- Palm looks alright -it will be like new by the end of May for us here in Montreal. We had a brutal winter here in Montreal this year. We will improve this technique combining our methods.

here are a few plants I uncovered -Agaves-yucca- also a video on youtube with a trachy uncovered but it talks about ordering from Montreal Palms so I did not post that one -you can see that on youtube

Tim,
Im still using the Xmas light C9 for 2 of my windmill under stryrofoam box and its working very well, will post a video soon. Thats an option for the mummywrap, but these kind of lights will disapear in the next few years. I dont think the heatcable for pipe heat to much, thats depend the longer of the cable. Ex.: if you using a 40 foots cable for a 8 feets windmill, its to much, it produce 200watts. But using a 24 feets, producing 168 watts is better.

Mike,
Will call you soon to meet you and discuss about the mummywrap technic, if we can find the way to do this well. That will be nice for everyone crazy like us  ..

I chickened out, I looked for the forecast for next week with low of -5C (23F) and decided to hold on with opening the boxes for another week. The minimum temperature in the boxes never went so low all winter long, so why risk now? Also the rain would not help, last year one Waggie had a spear pull because I water it too much after the winter. The box keeps it relatively dry, even though there is snow melting around it.

It will be 25 tonight and tomorrow night. I'm not too worried about it though. By the end of the week it will be 60s for the high and mid 30s at night. I think so spring has finally arrived.
