Hi Lori,
Z.floridana var." Palatka Giant" I loaded up on these during the past year
Have some outside that may have made it through the Winter, ( waiting for a new flush), If everything works out I'm going to try and establish a breeding colony of these.

Still waiting for the bigger things to start up, feel free to add any pics. you have 8)

Just curious as to if I could try some at my house Steve? I hate to be bold and ask for some, but I think my inter City climate and with a South facing wall, I think they might do really good.
When can you make a trip here to see my stuff & make an "Arnold's Greenhouse" run?

Hi, Steve.
I just bought some Zamia floridana seeds also. How cold did it get during your last winter? I'll be interested to know if your plants survived.
Here is a photo of my new leaves...zamia furfuracea.

Lori,
Thanks for the photo! That is a great close up ( I really need to think about upgrading my camera soon )

The lowest here this winter was -1F / -18C . They seemed to tolerate the cold, the worst of the damage occured after a warm day with an 1'+ of rain and then another hard freeze. This was my fault since I never put a cover over them.

I've learned from my mistakes and am still confident these will pull through........it's just the waiting now

Wes, (Kansas),

You should have at least one already, Think it was in the second batch that went your way

Hi, Steve

Did you have them in pots or in the ground? Can you keep us posted on their survival? I have never heard of any cycad surviving those types of temps (minus 13 Celsius) and will be thrilled if that is so. That gives me hope for cycads for Canada!

Yea, it had scale on it and died :(
Luckly thou, that was the ONLY thing that had scale on it. It didn't move to any others. I can trade you a CIDP & Dachy seedlings for one.

Not to worry,
I won't bother you or anyone else with my scale infested plants...........

P.S.- Zamias are not a host for scale.

NOOOOOOO!!!! I really do not think your trees had scale. I think it might have picked it up from a Citrus (Grapefruit) tree I got from my kids babysitter.
But it died before it spread to any others.
I can't say enough good things about the trees you have been so generous to give out. None of them have had Scale when you gave them to me. I think that ole Grapefruit gave it to it.

Asian Scale

Post by Knnn » Fri Mar 30, 2007 8:25 am

Scale on Cycads is something I may take too seriously. Asian scale is currently decimating large native populations of Cycas.
Most of mine are grown from seed and I do go to great lengths to inspect plants that come from states where this may be present.

The common pest such as spider mites, brown scale, mealybugs etc generally don't bother with Cycads too much.

"The aulacaspsis scale is fatal for most species of the genus Cycas, yet members of the genera Ceratozamia, Dioon, Encephalartos, Macrozamia, Microcycas, and Zamia are effectively unharmed by this scale pest. While none of these plants are common in the nursery trade, the Dioon (pronounced dye-oon) species may be the best replacements for the king and queen sago. They are easy to grow in south Florida, are among the easiest of the large cycads to find in wholesale nurseries, and are similar in size to the king and queen sago. While they do not have widely used common names in English, their scientific names are not terribly long."

Excerpt is from a short discussion on Asian Scale, rest of article is here --> http://www.plantapalm.com/vce/misc/dioon.htm

Yea, I definatly KNOW that YOUR tree did not have it when you gave it to me. About a month or so later, my youngest's babysetter was given two Citrus trees. I saw them in her garage and she offered them to me. I was hesitant as I could see they had HORRIBLE scale. But me being a Citrus lover, I took them.
But yea, I would love to try another one, but this time planted on my South facing wall that gets actually good Sun from morning until night.

I went ahead and pulled up the pots of my Yucca Trechy & the one Sego I had in front.
So far, everything in the greenhouse is staying good. I have a lil heater in there and it seems to be keeping up.

Nice shot! What do you use to heat your greenhouse, KNN? Your plants seem to love it, and in zone 5 it must be a challenge.

I went to Raymone Sharon house today,and bought a 5 gallon,sabal minor,Mcurtain,vareity,6years from seed,for
25 bucks.he has some seedlings,of a sabal that has 8ft fan spread leafs,he said these don't trunk,I don't know of this vareity do you?
He has 3 gallons of the sabals, but I didn't get a price, and lots of basjoos, here's his number if you'd like to call him and get
a price list,he doesn't have a computer, and he didn't take any of these to the farmers market.

The Sabal minor " McCurtain " lineage goes back to natualized specimens from McCurtain County,OK
Should prove to be quite hardy, not sure what differences in growth rate, etc.

Thanks for the Info! I forsee a trip to Wichita in my near future ... lol

Your Sago should be starting up soon, about half of mine have so far. Still waiting for the verdict on the Zamias outside, cleared the mulch and found some healthy root nodules at the surface, just need the warm weater to stick around a while.

I forgot to ask you how your robusta did?
Mine that I covered with trash cans, did get some leaf freeze burn, even the top part of the new leaf spears are brown, but when they come out some more there are green,so half leaf is brown other half green!!!
I tell you they look a little ragged, hopefully with the warmer weather they will perk up again!

The robusta suprised me, it fared better than the native trees!
Just a little tip burn, Two fans were on their way out before the freeze- if anything it sped that process up a little.

Good to hear yours are OK, I'm sure by the end of Summer all evidence of damage will be long gone.
