Deals now on last year's plants

Post by seedscanada » Fri Mar 08, 2013 1:50 pm

Some of you have seen deals at your local garden centres... so have I!
Today I picked up this 15 gallon needle palm with a foot of clear trunk:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8539520999/" title="Needle palm by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8375/8539 ... acc8_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Needle palm"></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8540623944/" title="Needle palm trunk by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8528/8540 ... 7779_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="Needle palm trunk"></a>

They had deals on spindle palms and a Mediterranean fan palm that was 25 bucks and flowering, but infested with mealy bug.
This is something I was surprised to see there. Variegated furcraea:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seedscanada/8540625074/" title="Furcrea variegata by seedscanada, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8087/8540 ... e9c3_z.jpg" width="474" height="640" alt="Furcrea variegata"></a>

Anyone else score lately with deals on last years' plants?

Very nice plants. Love that furcraea, never been lucky enough to find one of those. Our big box stores always clear inventory in Oct. During that time I may go to everyone in anticipation. Not wanting anyone to get em first.

yeah its a bit past clear out time here. the garden center at the box stores have been empty for awhile. my local walmart got in there roses and some fruit trees yesterday so it won't be long. I made them open a skid of humus/manure and sell me some bags before it was even in the system..boy were they mad :D. Oh well. There garden center manager acts like he dosen't even like plants he will start discounting stuff in June so I have to be on the look out for him

Couldn't you have bought the palms with Mealy Bug and left them outside for a while to kill them? or would they simply go dormant?

I would not risk all my other plants. Not with mealy bug.
Somehow two years ago I found my groundcover creeping jenny was in decline. It was infested with mealy. Obviously a hitchhiker from a newer plant. Quite a threat, with creeping jenny under one third of all my garden shrubs and flowers.

At the greenhouse we would treat any malady or bug. Except mealy bug. If we saw mealy on a plant, all plants in that batch (could be close to 4000 palms in a 53' trailer) were re-inspected. Often they would emerge after a day or two, almost from stasis three days in a trailer from Florida. They would be batches usually of one or two species of plant... Picked down south with poor inspection or grading.

There have been trucks entirely refused. We have had to throw out half a trailer load of palms. Directly off the truck, into the twenty yard trash bin. My heart sank the first time I had to do this. Treatment though is tricky, time consuming and not certain. The risk of cross contamination is too high. Last thing you want is to ship out to a client with mealy bug. They can refuse the order, may even throw their entire order in their dumpster. That's no way to make friends. Last think they want is to have their entire garden center infested with mealy. That could honestly shut them down.

So yeah. Will I buy a plant with mealy bug on it? Never. No way.

Wow, sounds like they are the worst kind of pest to get, and it would suck to have to pitch a whole load of palms because of it.

I just had a Cardboard palm that had defoliated in the fall because I left it outside too long, but inside the warm seedling room I have it came back with a vengence...but somehow got Mealy Bug on it. Quaranteened it to a shower stall it went through a regimen being sprayed with insectcide and getting sprayed off outside many times, then also after learning the Adult Male Mealy bug can fly...... fumigated the entire room even though I didn't see any on any other plants in there.

Hated to just throw away the Cardboard Palm if it could be saved. Time will tell.

That Needle palm has some Large Needles on it. Looks great those.
Nobody panics when people plant normal trees because its part of the plan... if someone plants a Palm EVERYONE LOSES THERE MINDS!
