Palm ID?

Post by sashaeffer »

Stumbled across a nursery in Lincoln, NE today and was amazed at the selection. These big palms though weren't marked for price or as to what kind they were. Kid working there said they were a Date Palm.....That much I did know, but what KIND of Date palm? He said they put them outside the store in the summer for display, but are for sale. From what I could find on the net, they look like simple Date Palms. Anyone?

Palm was every bit of 10ft or more in height.

Hi Scott, looks like a Phoenix Robelenii...the smaller Phoenix species.

FUnny thing - The conservatory here has a plant that looks identical to that labeled "phoenix canariensis". After some googling, it turns out it is misnamed. By the time Canary island date palms produce a trunk, the leaves are already 10 feet long, and the trunk is at least 3 times as wide as the one in your pic, or at the place here.

Its a pygmy date palm, and a bloody big one at that....

Ya know... the kid told me they had two smaller ones and (I'm sure my eyes got big) and this place had all kinds of palms crammed together but he pulled one out and said it was $40.00 and I said I would take it. He then said there was a 2nd one so I could compare so pulled it out and then noticed both had multapal trunks and I realized the small ones were Pygmy date palms. Pygmy date palms that size can be bought anywhere around here starting at less than $10. I thought at least the big palm either really was a single Pygmy Date palm that just was really huge, or was of a different species. I mean, it has the "pineapple" at the very top.

Looking at Phil's site at Jungle Music just now under Pygmy date palms it does look just like this.....

Agree PDP.
They're usually done in sets of 3-5 seeds per pot.
I bet if you dig down a few inches on that tall spindly single one, there'll be a couple or three stumps.

I like the single look.

I like the single look too Barb, and there are a couple of nurseries her in Omaha that sell single truck specimens but even those are just 2 feet of clear trunk.

These I could stand under, and I'm 6' They had other cool stuff so next time I'm there I'll have to ask for curiosity sake ask what they cost.

Even if that big one was something I could afford I have no idea how I would get it home. Too tall even for my truck, and that nursery is 60 miles from my house :(

only 60 miles?
sheesh, one January I drove 100 miles just to LOOK at a different nursery
Wrap in a huge sheet of painter's drop cloth, and lay it down in the truck

You're not crazy enough yet, Scott.

Agree, not crazy enough.
Plan on a road trip with your truck down to Dallas for the farmers market. Then you'll be crazy enough.

Barb, 60 miles is nothing to me to get a deal, but I would have to rent a cube van to get that palm home. No way I could bring it home exposed that far even in nice weather.

Scott, you've gotta get to know a trucker...

Erik, I remember that video, what happened to the audio (wanted to hear you).
Thank goodness that Dallas isn't within 200 miles of me...

Stopped back at this nursery to look again at a couple of things I saw the other day and noticed because of my comment to them about stuff not priced they had tags now on the really tall palms. The Pygmy Date palm (see pic) Tall Christmas mulitpal palms where under $200(14 ft tall)

The REAL surprise was that I missed a section the other day with palms/plants marked down!! Nothing is marked for species though and I saw 3 Palm like small plant and asked what they were and was told "Jungle Drum Palm" for $8 so grabbed one of those. Great looking small, understory shade loving palm.

The real find though was a 10ft? tall Fishtail single truck(not sure of species) for $12.00!! just had to "rescue" it, but problem is won't fit in work car so will drive back with my truck(about 60 miles). I asked why such a price on that palm (they had a Kentia for $10 as well about 5/6 ft tall) and was told they do a lot of interior tropical plants for local business and sometimes plants out grow their surroundings so they are given back to the nursery and they re-sell them, or home owners that bought plants there out grow their home so they give them back(where fishtail came from)

Will post pics of it after I pick it up. Would like though to find out what kind of specific fishtail it is, if there is a way to tell.

Barb, if saw the inside of this place with all the tropicals and palms it's amazing. Some isles you have to walk down sideways just to get through. If they let me, I'll try and take some pics inside and post with my camera as they are much better than using my phone.

Couldn't sleep last night anxious to pick up the Fishtail. I'll need to trim off some brown leaves, give it a good spray for bugs and a bath, but should be good to go.

The wife will be so pissed!

Might be a good idea to try and get W interested in growing stuff...ANY stuff.
Then she'll understand.

I told H years ago that our marriage license has an expiry date.
He laughed and said he got the message.
Now he routinely asks how such-and-such is doing ('coz he can't find it anyway).
When/if I repot stuff, he says "oh, that's new?" Yeah, the pot.

Bless him! I won.

Case in point..just this morning. I had seen some Spindle Palms at the Lowes we usually shop, triples for $22.00 I'm no fan of Spindle palms, and I have had ZERO luck keeping them alive but want to give it one more try. She gave me a gift card we got from a neighbor for taking care of his house when he's gone to use to buy the palm.

She said as she was handing me the card "This is the LAST ONE right??" I had to remind her that Phil is holding (now 7) for me, Steve in Alabama now 2 and Seabreeze nurseries the 1 variegated seedling.

Before she could say anything...I gave her a hug and said "at least I don't gamble, or go to strip bars...and having so many palms to take care of keeps me at home!"

(I don't think it helped)

Now since I have my truck to get that Fishtail today, I might just have to get that $10 Kentia as well. I mean it DOES need a home.

Your dear W knows she's fighting a losing battle, and has a good heart :D

Love your rationale.
So true.

I glance at the casino parking lots, how many cars are there with people peeing their money away.
What a waste.
When they could be buying palms.

And those who go to strip bars, can't get NEAR palm trees :booty:
