Late November palms in Wisconsin

Post by wxman »

I'm closing up my windmill palms Sunday for the winter, so I thought I'd post a few final pictures of the season. Overall a great growing season here with above normal temperatures most months.

This trachy has been in the ground since 2008. Wife and daughter for scale.

Here is a trunk height measurement. It has added 20 inches since March.

Planted this one in 2010 -- it was actually bigger than my oldest one when first planted. Grew slow for awhile, now it's finally picking up speed.

Trunk height picture of the 2nd windmill palm.

Here is my little waggie that I've had since a strap leaf seedling. Planted it this past March.

Finally, here is my new magnolia grandiflora '24 below' that I planted in May, along with a couple yucca filamentosa 'color guard' that have been in the ground since spring of 2011.

Oh, and I'm going to be doing something extravagant next spring. I'm taking down my maple tree and replacing it with a Phoenix sylvestris that I will protect. I'm hoping to get a nice palm specimen in the middle of my yard. See pic for location:

I will succeed!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

taking out Maple trees.
me too.
Seems I've been raking for weeks, and need a season's pass to a chiropractor again :?

Super growth on those Trachies this summer, Tim.
And those Color Guards have doubled in size in one growing season!

Lovely Waggie.
Same type box as the Trachies for winter?
taking down my maple tree and replacing it with a Phoenix sylvestris
Great idea!
At this point I'll remind you   that you'd already have a FABULOUS P.sylvestris.
That is, if you hadn't treated it like an annual :fart: :bootyshake:
(Couldn't resist that!)

Is that gorgeous little Christmas Palm indoors?

Thanks for the comments. The palms and magnolia are now boxed for the winter. The waggie and magnolia just got a poly box with a 35/45 thermocube that runs x-mas lights. The other two trachys got their usual poly box covered in foam with a space heater inside set to 40F.

Barb, the X-mas palm is inside safe and sound. Yeah I know I should have saved my previous sylvestris, but taking out the maple was off limits back then, lol.

So you got tired of raking leaves too?

A P.sylvestris in that featured spot will be out of this world beautiful.
Get ready to build another box.

This is what I want to do when I get a house someday. Plus I like to live in Indiana but I want to move somewhere little warmer Zone 7b at the coldest.
Nobody panics when people plant normal trees because its part of the plan... if someone plants a Palm EVERYONE LOSES THERE MINDS!

Your palms are really starting to grow now. Good job overwinter them.
