sabal minor
I have a sabal seedling that is from a KY plant that is about 15 years old so I feel it will have wonderful cold hardy genes but I really like the look of sabals and want a mature or semi mature plant. it just seems no one sells mature sabals, at least I can't find any. someone want to point me in the right direction. I know phil has some on his website but shipping on one that big would be a killer. prefer someplace on the east coast if I can find it.

I think Erik got his from a "mobile nursery" that toured through his part of Oklahoma a year or two ago.
Hope he chimes in here.

Hi mike.... this is about as good as it gets for Sabal Minor in Europe. Not enough heat to grow well in the UK and our westerly winds usually damage the fronds. Still great plants though

I have the following-
Sabal 'birmingham', 3 G, $30.00.
Sabal minor (Cape Hatteras), 3 G, $30.00; 5 gallon $45.00.
Sabal palmetto, 7 G, $50.
Sabal x brazoriensis, 7 G, $55.
Send me a PM, if interested.
Thanks,
Steve
Mike, the mobile nursery is a guy that rounds up tropicals in Florida and brings them to us Okies for purchase. I dunno if he actually ships anything or just has his Florida sales and the stuff he brings here when the weather gets warm. Interestingly, alot of his plants are true tropicals ( bismarckia, foxtail, bottle, hibicus, Pygmy dates etc) that are truly just really nice annuals here in OK. I've asked him to bring sabals and California fans but I guess that he doesn't grow them, or more likely, people here won't buy them, since they aren't that "taste of the tropics" people crave. It's easy to forget that we're the minority when it comes to actually growing out of zone stuff, versus the majority that just throws them away after the first hard freeze.
Anyway, tangent aside, Stevea07 is a stand-up plantsman, and probably your best bet. I got a brazoria from him last year. He sent pictures, so I got to pick the actual palm I wanted! It was shipped very well and not a damaged frond on it. His price is very good and also packaging and shipping were very good. Highly reccomend him.

Andy, that Sabal on eBay looks like the one i bought last spring here for 100 dollars. Maybe that one was slightly bigger than mine. AlsoAndy, have you ever purchased from that eBay seller? they seem to have a good assortment.
Kris, you are right. Wereally are the minority
Stevea, hi. Do you have access to any Jubaea chilensis ?

Not yet Adam but his prices and more importantly delivery charges are a lot better than from Germany the seller is from Spain but is aiming for the German Market hence everything is in German but deals with a lot of Brits.seedscanada wrote:Andy, that Sabal on eBay looks like the one i bought last spring here for 100 dollars. Also I've run out of space for anymore plants

Steve, wish we knew your trick for reducing it to 3-4 years (from 10).3-4 years before they are a good size.
Any tips?

Sorry to be late.
Kris is right about the mobile nursery. I have asked them for Sabal minor and they act interested but have not come through for me.
There is a small nursery in town that sells Sabal minor, needle palms, etc (plus my trunked Yucca rostrata).
Another nursery formerly sold Sabal minor McCurtain from seed they collected but once they sold out they lo longer have them.
I have seen "blue pot" Sabal minor at box stores--but only down in Texas. Still, you could ask the nursery manager at your local "box store" (Home depot, Lowes) if they can order you some. Ditto a good local nursery. They have more resources than you do.

Oh, if only those were available...anywhere.a good sized seedling, say 18-20 inches
I'd snap one up too...
Some folks in the UK complain they're so slow growing, probably because UK summers are coolish.
Keep me in mind too, please, Steve for an 18-20 incher.
...I'll complete the declaration.
Ahem. cough cough.

Everybody MUST see the palms in Steve's link...are they ever fabulous!
The Jubaea is breathtaking, marvel at the trunk diameter
The brahea...the nannorrhops...sabals....fabulous specimens in a great yard.
Great yucca in there too.
I can easily duplicate the 100F summer days, but have nada humidity when it's hot.
Hard to believe NC is that dry, with hurricanes and gulf stream, etc.
Thanks Steve for the link.
I pretended for a moment that was my place.

Obviously haven't been giving it the right conditions.
Really slow grower when young (aren't all Sabals???)
Good luck with your seeds.

Hey Erik, meant to ask you:
Since Sabals like swampy ground, I've been thinking of putting pots into the fishpond.
Maybe just an inch or two immersed?
Our summer dry heat/wind is probably hard on them?
Think that might speed them up?

In habitat, most are in swampy ground or near streams (at least in McCurtain County, OK). But I do see some up high and dry.
Still, the biggest ones are in swamps. So, I say give it a try.
My little ones are in pots that sit in a container and so are usually damp.
Photo taken 1 minute ago--sure love cell phone Flickr app, plus our amazing weather lately:

Erik,
Yours have such long long leaves.
Beautiful.
OK, I'll give them a try in the fishpond this year.
I've seen that Flickr app emblazoned across the sign-in page...sure glad they removed the sound (I don't have a cellphone).
I was always "racing" the ad.
Got my hands on some McCurtain seeds this year.
Hope to have at least one come up.
Thanks!
Barb
