not sure what those spots are............I walked by the Illicium quickly this morning and it looked better but we've been below freezing for 8 days straight now..........tomorrow will be above freezing so I'll find out soon.

They certainly look like nectrotic spots. Let us know if those leaves regain their colour!
<img src="http://weathersticker.wunderground.com/ ... /71265.gif" />
I looked at the Illicium leaves this morning and they look much better........80% of those spots were gone. Tomorrow is suppose to hit 50F so I'll take a photo tomorrow when it heats up......if those spots are damaged they may show up in a few weeks??

Those leaves look in a sorry state. I think that where the colour has turned brown is beyond recovery. The plant will recover but there may be some holes in the leaves later on. I'm still befuddled by the fact that you can grow these plants in a 6B climate. Must be those green fingers you possess Tim

Looks like my rhodies Tim. Even my PJM leaves are curled and droopy. I will say, my holly shrub is alive, just a few burnt leaves from what I can see. Didnt think that would make it up here.

nice to hear a holly shrub can survive in your area. Is this it's first winter outside? If so next season it should be even hardier!

Yup, first winter. Im pretty sure its "blue prince/princess", so its supposed to be hardy to around -30C (which i what the low was). Even if it dies back a bit youre right, it will be way hardier next year!

When people here talk about BLEs, I'm always surprised no-one mentions Euonymous.
Here's my variegated euonymous, after deer had been chewing on it all winter.
Not a great photo, but you get the idea.

Yes, it's a beautiful plant! I have a few varieties growing well in my zone. I like the wild variety very much. It is robust, very fast rowing and never loosing the leaves no matter how low a winter temperature is...

My dog keeps deer away from my palms and cycads, thankfully.
She must've been on a coffee break here:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southslope/7463226532/" title="001 by edible_plum, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8002/7463 ... 7ccb_c.jpg" width="600" height="800" alt="001"></a>
Young deer are destructive; they're just learning what to nibble on.
Whitetail deer are worse than mulies...they'll eat the bumper off a Ford before they realize it's not food.

I'm glad mine is evergreen, adds some interest to an otherwise lacklustre landscape in winter.

Nice pic. I too like euonymus for their colorful evergreen shows. I have yellow, green and white and green varieties. They right now have handsome dark red berries on them that contrast well with the glossy yellow and greens. I have a few of the (alatus) burning bush varieties around the side of the house. . They grow into medium sized trees also round here. Seems the only thing that kills euonymus is scale. That can be a bitch to get rid of!

Yes it is almost as if the stems have extra sheaths like scars growing out the sides of them. They are actually really invasive especially down the coast here in NJ. Here is a pic of the odd twig when bareandym wrote:No barb but this Euonymus had very strange bare stems.
