Ok guys, I took a couple photo's of my Dwarf Palmetto and my Needle Palm last Saturday before we had our cold snap pass through this week with -18 at night. Here they are.\\
My Dwarf Palmetto with a rose cone for protection. If the weather was above 3 celsius I removed the rose cone to get it fresh air and a lil sun.
My Needle Palm. Up until Saturday, January 18, the only protection was a blanket over top of it and a tarp when we were expecting rain/snow. As of the 19th, I put a garbage pail over the top of it with our night time lows getting down to -18C. We are seeing a warm up at the end of this week so I'll probably remove the garbage pail again. One of the new fronds pushing up is not very green though. Was like this already near the end of the summer. I did very little with this guy. No fert and not a lot of water this summer.
looks like the Sabal might have a bit of leaf damage, but you wont know for sure until the spring when it warms up. The needle looks right happy though!

Mike, you guys are a good 6-7 degrees colder then us during the cold snap. We are more or less back to seasonal on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday we are pushing 6 degrees.
My Needle palm protection this winter, I plan on finding good spot to plant it this spring along with a few others i have stuffed in my barely heated greenhouse.
My sabal minor with no protection seems to be holding its own
Heres what it looked like towards the end of summer.
Glenn, welcome to palmsnorth! What has been your coldest temperature this winter? your palms look good!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Well the coldest it's been here so far was -4F last week. Below zero temps happen at least once or twice around here each winter,it's unavoidable. I keep a gas heater in my green house for those really fridgid nights. I have a ton more sabals and needles in there I plan on planting outside in the spring.
Winter is a long time going up here
Oh yeah I love the sabals too,to bad they grow so SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW. I really didn't start to get nervous until the temp. started to drop below 0.F around here with that one planted out in the open like that.
Very Slow lol. Even with warm ground temps all winter they would still grow slowly just not as slow. It would still be like watching a 500 mile race between 2 slugs lol.
