January Palm Photo's in Zone 5b
Ok guys, I took a couple photo's of my Dwarf Palmetto and my Needle Palm last Saturday before we had our cold snap pass through this week with -18 at night. Here they are.\\
My Dwarf Palmetto with a rose cone for protection. If the weather was above 3 celsius I removed the rose cone to get it fresh air and a lil sun.
My Needle Palm. Up until Saturday, January 18, the only protection was a blanket over top of it and a tarp when we were expecting rain/snow. As of the 19th, I put a garbage pail over the top of it with our night time lows getting down to -18C. We are seeing a warm up at the end of this week so I'll probably remove the garbage pail again. One of the new fronds pushing up is not very green though. Was like this already near the end of the summer. I did very little with this guy. No fert and not a lot of water this summer.

Good Job Jeff...
looks like the Sabal might have a bit of leaf damage, but you wont know for sure until the spring when it warms up. The needle looks right happy though!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Well the coldest it's been here so far was -4F last week. Below zero temps happen at least once or twice around here each winter,it's unavoidable. I keep a gas heater in my green house for those really fridgid nights. I have a ton more sabals and needles in there I plan on planting outside in the spring.

Good stuff!
I love Sabals, but man are they ever SLOW this far north. I don't know what we can do to speed things along... maybe heat the soil?
