"Growop"/Houseplants/Tims Yucca seedlings

A bit of a random thread. I lost a ton of houseplants this year, due to the summer (less loss) and working too much to bring them in before cold (the bulk). I think I lost close to 40 plants: Small olive tree, 6 year old Baucarnia stricta seedlings, a 6 foot Draceanea tricolour, 2 var. of Ficus elastica, a Phal orchid, Areca palm, to name a few. Some managed to get some massive damage and survive, like my 2 Phoenix Canariensis/Roebelleniii, Chinese fan palm, Philidendron selloum and a Yucca Guatamalensis, that tool -12C outside in a pot with zero damage whatsoever.

I also recently bought myself a new 4 foot ballast for some grow lights. I used to use a jerry rigged 4 light system, but this doubles the luminens and wattage and at the same time giving me almost 1/4 more grow space.

I also have some pics of some seedlings of tims agave hybrid big mama, and elata #5. The only problem is I think I mixed up the pots when I sowed the seeds....

Seed order I got the other day. Cocoa, Rice paper plant, Carribean canna, Philodendron ichthyoderma, Prunus tomentosa and Dypsis albofarinosa

The "grow op". Various trachys, washys, Needle palms, 2 kinds of dypsis, a bunch of things im waiting to germinate, a batch of licula ramsyii that finally showed a spear... Im using tinfoil as a reflecter until I can cut some polished aluminum.

This is the bathroom. There are about 50 plants in there, from Ficus lyrita and religiosa, 2 kinds phalanopsis orchid, and 2 kind of Cymb orchid, Aloe Vera, Musa Acuminata var. and more

Draceana "janet craig". Note that the ceilings are 7.5 feet

Randoms. Those arrowhead vines have been around for over 30 years

Musa Basjoo, Big Dieffenbachia, a wide ficus benjimina and a good 20 or 30 others

Mine is just as bad in the summer, and worse in spring. Add another 200-300 pots of random stuff!

Did you know that white is actually a better reflector than tin foil?

Foil reflects heat better,white reflect light best.

Well, some of the labels faded, and I lost some more, but I should have the reg fortunai, naini tal, tesan and... I think tennessee.

I think ive read the same about white, but I forgot about foil being a heat reflector. That is a bonus to me, since I dont use supplemental heat....

A shame you lost some very nice stuff this year, but looks like you're making up for it.

Nice work on Tim's seedlings.

You can get stuff to germinate without supplemental heat? Amazing.

I built a Greenhouse to avoid inundating my house with plants and bugs lol.

Question about the Yucca's and even Agave's from seedlings, how long do they usually take to go from seeds to something say a Nursery would sell to you in a 3 gallon?

Barb, I went outside to check on things (all is well, even the zone 7 rose

), and i walked past the plant graveyard in the back porch. 2 cacti, the oney tree and the pomm.....

Most things germinate just as well at room temp, they just take longer. The only things ive had problems with are Musa/Ensete, and Yucca. Although, when I started, i got like 12 batches of palm seeds that never germinated....

Jeff - They need heat and light. Lots of it. They also have very long tap roots, so longer pots may help as well. My seedlings were in small pots, shot glass sized plastic cups, and they arent growing fast at all.

The expert yucca growers on PN, I bet, could have them 3 gal size in 3 or 4 years (guessing).

I've started only a few...y.rostrata and the Big Mama yucca seeds from Tim.
Will probably be in a rest home by the time they hit that size.

Jesse, I hope you recovered those seeds from the soil.
You can de-lid them and try again because palm seeds are pricey.

Nice job Jesse. That first photo of the Y. filata with wide leaves seems 'way too cool'. Keep us updated on that one.........very unusual trait to have wide leaves......VERY RARE...........don't kill it!!! I'm gonna sow some of my seeds! I haven't tried any. Are you sure this wide leaf seedling is not a Yucca Guatamalensis?

The second photo of Y. filata seedlings look 'normal'. Good job.

PS, you have a TON of plants. Nice job.

Hi Jeff,

a Yucca filamentosa will be somewhat mature looking after 3 seasons when planted in the ground. If you grow them in containers they will never mature.

Yuccas like root tip growth. I have a Yucca elata grown from seed in year 2000 and it has 3 feet of trunk now.

This was a coons age ago, when I first started this (10 years?) They sat for 3 years, some for longer. Some of the pots has some wicked looking moss in them.

When you sent them, they were labeled "Y filata #5" and "Yucca "big mama". Even if by some small chance, this is one of the other yucca seeds ive tried (Yucca glauca and filamentosa), they dont look like the one in question, at this stage. The funny thing too is that the pot was left for months, since July or so. I left for 4 days, and I notice that lil guy.

At first I thought it was an agave, but again, it doesnt have agave leaves, or look like any agave ive ever tried to grow or germinated.

Hi Jesse,

that wide leaf Yucca seedling looks very different from typical Yucca seedlings. If it's a Yucca seedling I would have to guess some species from Mexico which is more tropical. Do you have a photo of your Y. Guatamalensis? Even filamentosa leaves are narrower than your wide leaf seedling. Glauca is narrow.

Tim i never ordered guatamalensis seeds. If you crossed them then its different. mine has never set seed or flowered. there is a pic of mine in the bathroom pic. Its in the.middle of the bathroom pic infront of the dracanea marginata.

Its totally possible that it isnt you seed tim but nothing ive ever ordered looks anything like this guy

The 2 in the biggest pots, are A paryii, the Smaller 3 on the right are A utahensis, and the 2 small ones on the left are A montana.

The A parryii are the ones you sent me years ago, theyre only that small! You never sent me montana because I had some seeds (these ones).

Would you believe the Parryii are 2 years older then the 2 others?

Wow! I threw some A. parryi seeds outdoors in a germination bed this summer and they grew to about half as large as the ones pictured.

Are you using a peaty-based soil?
Mine are in cactus-like soil...I obviously goofed there.

it was relatively warm and then the grass got covered with snow/warm again after it melted-we'll see how long that lasts.

Yea,Barb-whenever he sent those seeds out last,I think it being able to stretch it's roots out helps maybe?

That is just Miracle-grow with some sand and perlite thrown in.

They burn easy! I had palms that are hardier.

linearifolia does look like querotanensis but linearifolia is much hardier.......people in Europe claim linearifolia is hardy to -5F or so while querotanensis is hardy to +15F or so. This is my first winter with linearifolia outside...........I'll let you know if it survives inside that protection.

Aaron....at what temp do you think your linearifolia died? You really think it was mis-ID'd as a querotanensis?

I orderd a Y. linearifolia from "Plants Delights". It showed up through the mail and was labeled "Y. linearifolioa". I planted it, but thought it looked so different I started having my doughts about the sp. It look more like Nolina longifolia. It had square sided leaves, nothing like any yucca I have ever seen. I thought how would anyone think this looks like a thin leafed rostrata. Well...too make this story short it was not linearifolia, it is (was) Y.quarotanensis!

And it was not hardy, Nolina longifolia lasted longer.

PS. my Y. querotanensis died half way into winter, and it was covered. I think it was a mild year, this was a few years back.

Plants Delight has a 'new' linearifolia.........I may get one........it has a slight variegation along the leaf edges..........looks cool.
