Winter blooming plants?

In my zone 6b, I've seen some roses still with blooms, and a few Chrysanthemums. My strawberry tree has blooms, as well as one of the camellias has flower buds (I planted both this season so flowers might not typically be this late). I'm pretty sure all blooms will be lost soon since its going to drop to -9 C next week, so far the coldest night has dropped down to -4 C.

Just curious about:

1) What other plants are still blooming this late into the year where you live ?
2) What will be first to bloom early next year?
3) What interesting foliage plants stay green through winter? (ex. climbing hydrangea stays green where I live)
4) What plants keep green and have colorful berries through winter? (ex. holly where I live)

Nothing blooms at my place after 78 cm of snow and minus 30C outside

A shrub would be blooming first in my garden is a february daphne. But it blooms in March but not in February though. Star Magnolia and forsythia will be following the daphne shortly after.

How come a climbing hydrangea stays green where you live? Would you please show a picture? Thanks!

1.
Strawflower (Xerochrysum bracteatum) keeps its flower through January.

2. Pawpaw blooms rather early. Theres all the snowdrops, muscari, tulips and daffofils which are pushing up now.

3, Ivy such as virginia creeper, theres loquat , Quercus fusiformis. Magnolia grandiflora, monkey puzzle tree, many yuccas, many phyllostachys bamboos, arbutus unedo, sequioa giganteum, euonymus, ilex, osmanthus goshiki... theres just what i have. oh and eucalyptus debeuzevillei oh and on the wish list daphniphyllum macropodum. others are daphne and many rhododendrons

4. berries. ilex. barberry (but no leaves), mahonia with blue berries, sometimes korean dogwood

I think it might not be a climbing hydrangea what I saw .. but its definitely still green.
Not sure what it is:

Around town, I saw a variegated yucca (gold guard) that looks pretty interesting .. don't have photos.
Btw, what kind of bamboo is that? It almost reaches the power lines.

Duke, that looks like Phyllostachys aurea bamboo. the other looks like ivy, Hedera helix 'teardrop'.

I do love Hebes and I have two summer flowering species flowering in Winter. Here is Hebe "fragrant blue" not the bit bothered by my recent mini freeze

I'm in Windsor, ON which is the same zone as you .. maybe a bit milder because I'm very close to water. I put the arbutus tree in the ground late in the fall this year. I was going to take it out and put it in the garage before winter cold really hits, but then I read how these trees can't stand being moved. So now I'm thinking of trying to protect where it is. Last year it only dropped to -15 once for a few hours .. if it's the same this year I might not even have to protect it that much. Its on the south side of my house which should also help. If it makes it through winter, I'll post an update with a picture.

I've seen a dwarf verity of filberts here, but not Witchazel.
Don't really have much experience with these plants.
Do you have these in your garden?

No... not yet at least. Ive wanted a witchhazel/hazel nuts for a while though. I know hazels bloom VERY early. There are some very nice cultivars, like the contorted hazel:

I cant remember exactly when filberts bloom, in S ontario, they bloom around march according to the ontario agro site.

They are native to New Zealand. That one in the picture is of the more succulent variety but is amazingly hardy surviving our month long December '10 freeze which in the UK killed many Trachycarpus Fortunei just north of me. I think it has also a good microclimate on a slope protected by my large Trachycarpus. Hebe" Midsummer beauty" has huge flowers, very scented and even bigger leaves. Sadly that did not survive that Winter but I took cuttings that easily root and has now grown into a nice plant. My lowest that Winter was -12C but more damaging was the length of time spent below freezing which killed all my "hardy" Schefflera species.
