Big Foxtail Fronds more plumose
They look so ragged when young.
This guy's leaf segments are almost fully plumose now.

I cut off all the badly sunburned fronds.
Can't wait for it to look like this:

Think I've had it for 3 or 4 years...a great deal at one of the big box stores one winter.
People were laughing as I hauled it out of the store...I think it was November?

I'll have to keep checking the big box stores around here. So far, I've only seen a few species in them, such as some Trachys, Majesty Palms, Parlor Palms, and Pygmy Date Palms. When I see what other members find, it seems like the big box stores are practically botanical gardens north of the border!

Our big box stores are FULL of Majesties..
Occasionally, there's some gorgeous palm--likely cleared out/leftover from their other stores--that arrives.
I once got a 1 gallon Licuala grandis (yes!!!!!), but it died within a year.
Staff didn't even know it was a palm *grin*
Just a matter of poking around in the corners.
It takes a very creative purchasing agent to send tropical palms to Canada
They probably get fired right afterwards.
I thought Seattle would be a mecca for palmophiles...
If not, at least you can order from Jungle Music (Phil Bergman) in California and won't need a phytosanitary certificate.
He has fabulous specimens that match his reputation.

I would be so excited if I saw something like a Licuala grandis at a big box store! I guess for now I'll have to periodically check Home Depot and Lowe's to see if there are any mislabeled palms to be found! I'd love to come across a spindle palm or adonidia sometime. On the other hand, I'm strangely tempted to try keeping a Majesty Palm sometime. They're so cheap and nice looking!
You are indeed correct that I can get palms from other states through mail-order. I might have to do that someday...

Robocaesar,
The L.grandis baby wasn't labelled and it took everybody here ages to figure out what it was.
Right about then it died...RIP little beauty.

I've got a nice Spindle, there's a Canadian big box store called RONA that, approx. 5 years ago, had 50+ Spindles arrive.
But only in their Kelowna store, their other locations had zilch.
Almost fell over with delight, and picked up mine.
Whenever I'm tempted to buy a Majesty...take an aspirin and wait for the urge to pass.
Not many people have kept them alive for more than a year.

Thanks Erik,
With your incredible heat last--and this--year, shade is a good idea.
Glad your foxtail and bottles are doing great.
Of all the foxtails I started from seed several years ago, a couple are standouts and don't burn in full sun.
Interesting when that kind of variation occurs among seeds from the same source.
Their siblings I've purposely allowed to fry (thinning the herd ).
Enjoy being back home after your time in Oregon this summer?
Your Sabal is sure doing nicely at Kris' place.

I was lucky to find this Foxtail at a nursery here in Omaha. Only had ONE...and had to just have it. It's been growing incredibly fast too.
