Palms and Subtropicals Update From Kingston, Ontario

Post by ScottyON » Wed Aug 15, 2012 8:08 am

Hey everyone,

It's been along time since I posted on the Palms North Board. I miss chatting with all the people here who are not connected to the North East Board or the Hardy Palms and Subtropical Board. Here is an update video on my yard in Kingston Ontario, zone 5b/6a.

Enjoy!

Thanks!!

Scott

Have you considered sinking metal "walls" into the ground to prevent bamboo creep?

Holy smokes that palm has grown! How many feet tall is it now? I think the bamboo has gone to wild to try and contain it. Should have done that at the start.

Can't find the tape measure  + too hot to be out now
Just hope it fits into the palm hut this Fall.

Running bamboo will make your neighbour mad... :?
But it sure looks nice in your yard...such a nice backdrop to the other plants.

Yeah me too, Scotty.

I don't like the idea of the growing point being so close to the roof--and the cold/ice/snow.
Will see when I get the thing up again.

You'll be protecting yours from the roof/second floor

Image

About 10ft of trunk and is growing 1ft a year even in my cool climate. Yeah once established these Trachies get really BIG

Hi Scotty, I am really impressed with your garden considering your zone. Like you I have a few Magnolias including Macrophylla ssp Ashei 8)

Regarding your Trachy I had a similar problem with Wagnerianus which was dug up and replaced in the same spot but in a more elevated position. When the plant produced new leaves there were hardly any stems. Happily that is no longer a problem.

Hey Andy. Beautiful trachy you have there! It's amazing what will grow in the UK. Very similar to the wet coast of Canada. I follow a few English gardiners on YouTube and love seeing he palms you grow with ease. Thanks for the comment regarding the fronds. I hope the problem corrects its self next year a grows longer petioles.
