Yuccas are starting to bloom

Post by TimMAz6 » Wed May 16, 2012 4:49 pm

I spotted the first Yuccas to send up blooms:

Yucca flaccida 'Tennessee Mountain Form' seed grown from Rob of Tenn.
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... AM0192.jpg>

Yucca 'constricta x filamentosa' x 'filamentosa x elata'.....I crossed this in 2006 and germed inn 2007....pretty quick.
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... AM0183.jpg>

Yucca 'constricta x filamentosa' x 'filamentosa x elata' full shot
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... 0181-1.jpg>

Yucca recurvifolia/gloriosa? from Jim Kelly of New Jersey....last time this bloomed was in fall
<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... AM0173.jpg>

Full shot of the Yucca recurvifolia/gloriosa getting pretty tall now

Damn. Too bad it did not continue growth from the main stem... Maybe an F2 will? Do you have any more seed?

I got tons of big mama seed if anyone wants some......I still haven't germed mine yet.

My Y. filata #5 is trunk forming. I sent most people this seed too. If anyone wants more let me know. I'll try to take a photo to show this filata. I also have Y. filata #3 which 'was' trunk forming after blooming but after the second bloom the mother died back........so not long term trunk forming. Hopefully #5 will be long term trunking! 8)

That big gorgeous Big Mama is dead????? :evil:
Damn.

Could it be one that flowers, produces seeds, and then croaks?

Especially since you had such a mild winter...how sad, sorry Tim.

Nice shots, Tim. I especially like the tall recurvifolia/gloriosa! It's too bad to hear about the "Big Mama" dying, but at least there are pups left over!

yes, big mama (original mother plant) is dead and new suckers are growing now.......I guess the filamentosa genes rule in that hybrid. It would be nice to get a filata that is truely trunk forming! 8)

Yes, sorry for your loss.

Wow, how'd you get a rostrata to bloom.....is this it's first spring in Chicago? My 6foot tall, 10 year old rostrata still hasn't bloomed.

Please try to hybridize your rostrata and filamentosa (both ways) as it produces awesome looking hybrids!

Yucca

Post by macario » Sat May 26, 2012 6:16 am

Barb where the rostrata is in the yard, no ones even seeing the bloom and the yards almost completely empty since i got divorced and removed everything but the cactus bed.

Tim I have no idea but I think it has to do with the type of muck soil I have and in the yard and the fact that the water tables really close to the surface. I have had 2 trachys in the ground bloom, 2 sabal minor in ground bloomed in the past, my needle palms bloom, meditearanian palm bloomed and even my pindo bloomed. My soil loaded with nutrients I think.

Yeah Tim i guess after a little reading most of the city where I lived was swamps and marshland so I guess that why everything in that yard grew so fast.

Tim- I'd like some more filata f2 seeds if you have them... I now have access to a growth chamber which will make germinating seeds that much easier!

Hope the rostrata pollen arrives in time to make some hybrids!

Post by macario » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:08 pm

Hello well just updating on the status of my yucca rostrata bloom and my attempt on cross pollination with a local filamentosa. my rostrata is about a few more days from maturing and I found a near by variegated filamentosa so i a havesting pollen from 2 different blooms and hand pollinating my rostrata wish me luck.

update#2

Post by macario » Tue Jun 19, 2012 6:58 am

Hello today I removed donor pollen from freezer at work and after work im going to hand pollinate the rostrata. I decided that im gonna remove the whole anther pollen and all. I will put the anther on the end of a thick long needle and push the whole anther through each stigma. I harvested so many I hope this works.

Good luck Macario with the hybrid attempt! Keep us updated.

Paul, the rostrata pollen may have worked on the Y. flaccida 'Tennessee Mountain'? Both flowers seem to be swelling. Only time will tell. All the gloriosa attempts appear to have failed. I wonder if gloriosas need more heat? They didn't appear to have much pollen. Today we finally surpassed 80F so I'm interested to see if there is more pollen in the flowers tomorrow am??

Aaron, Y. elata blooming? And it's not that big? Boy..............what are you doing?? You gotta get a Y. elata x neomexicana and a Y. neomexicana x elata (if there is enough time). My 6' tall elata still has not bloomed. What da?

Hi Aaron,

cool......Y. nana too! Any hybrid with nana would be great. Try to get nana to cross with an east coast Yucca since nana's won't grow here.....not sure why.....so east coast Yucca genes are needed!!

I noticed this morning that the Y. flaccida 'Tennesse Mountain' is forming 2 seed pods from the baccata pollen not Paul's rostrata pollen. So thanks for the baccata pollen.....I hope the pods fully ripen!!

That is great news Tim, I hope to see what that cross would look like. :shock:

I think the flowers are all gone now off the Y. nana, but there is always next year. :D

I took a couple of pods of Y. neomexicana and put them in the cooler for the Y.elata. :D

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Awesome!

Mine will be open next weekend, and I hope to make some hybrids then (I have pollen from Pallida and rostrata, not to mention the recurv. x filata, and filamentosa... Turns out none of my glauca will bloom this year. Damn.).

Tim those stalks are enormous.

Aaron,

that Y. elata is so cool. Keep us updated on it's bloom. 8)

PS, did you get any seed pods?

Paul,

I held off sending you pollen so you'll get it 'fresh'. My first flower of Y. 'constricata x filamentosa' x 'filamentosa x elata' opened last night. I'll pack some of that up for you. One tip...I have best success pollenating the flowers which open up later (on the ends of the branches). Not sure why.........but save some pollen for the end of the bloom too. PS, kill as many beetles as you can....I usually pick them and 'squeeze' them hard. :evil:
