The Original Central Florida

Post by dlake003 » Fri Jun 01, 2012 11:25 am

While in Florida, I recently took pictures of the native palms that grow in the central part of the state. I added the pictures to a Website. For those who are interested in taking the tour, the link is attached.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Thank you! It was a lot of work, but it was fun also. In fact, I'm still adjusting things on the Website.

I was in a position to spend a few months down here with my sister's family. I've been coming down to the Orlando area for years, but never really had the opportunity to scout around because of time restrictions in the past. The last portion of the Website is dedicated to the areas I visited to photograph specimens. Wekiva Springs and Spring Hammock Preserve were really beautiful. Seeing feral orange trees (probably left over from old homesteaders maybe) in the middle of the woods was really exciting to me. I was in Spring Hammock Preserve late in the afternoon both times and it could be pretty dark in there underneath the trees. I got caught in there the first time when a sudden thunderstorm blew up and my sister and I had to seek shelter underneath a young Sabal palmetto leaf. I felt like I was on Survivor.

The second time I was there, we were walking toward Lake Jesup (has the reputation of being the most alligator-infested lake in Florida) in the woods and I heard this low noise in the near distance. My sister said that alligators nest this time of year and they tend to be more aggressive. Since it was quarter till seven in the evening at this point, we decided to quickly make our way back to the parking lot. The preserve closed at dusk and there was no one else around. The thought of getting stuck in there all night did not appeal to me at all!

Alligators...the only thing that'll keep me from Florida
Climb a tree and strap yourself in for a long night.
