First New Plants of the Season

Post by Cameron_z6a_N.S. » Fri Apr 13, 2012 3:24 pm

Bamboo!

These are mostly 1-gallon sized. From the back (left to right):

Phyllostachys aureosulcata spectabilis, Phyllostachys nigra "Henon", Phyllostachys vivax aureocaulis, Phyllostachys aurea "Holochrysa", Semiarundinaria fatuosa viridis, Pleioblastus viridistriatus f. chrysophyllus, Indocalamus tessellatus, and Arundinaria gigantea
Image

As far as my outside bamboo are concerned, there have been some surprising results after the winter. All of my bamboo plants were planted in early August, so there wasn't too much time for root growth, etc.

1x 1 gallon Fargesia murielae: Fared pretty well, with a bit of leaf dieback.
2x 2 gallon Phyllostachys bissetii: There was more leaf dieback than I expected, maybe 30-40% of the leaves.
3x 1 gallon Pleioblastus pygmaeus distichus: Some leaf dieback, maybe 33% of the leaves.
2x 2 gallon Pseudosasa japonica: Did better than expected, with only around 10% leaf dieback.

I've noticed new leaves appearing on all of my outdoor bamboo, so we'll see how they do this season.

Glad you had good overwintering results, Cameron.

Can't wait to see the bamboo forming walls in your yard.

Where did you get them from? No one should be shipping here yet.....

Great score though! I havnt seen Arundinaria giganta for sale anywhere here!

Thanks, Barb! I'll make sure to post pics of their progress.

Canadianplant, I got them in an order that someone placed from the US. If the Arundinaria does well here, I'll make sure to send you some!

Tim, yeah, it reached around -1 C here last night. I'm hoping that this is the last week for freezing temps.

Thanks, Igor. I checked the prices of the plants compared to Canadian sources, and some of them cost 3x as much here than those from the US!

Cam- Not only that but the selection is less here AND we're at the mercy of the West Coast where hardiness is not generally an issue...

Thats Amazing. That is what my Rufa looks like (even the small patches of dried leaf). You should start to see some branching soon, which means some (hopefully) upsized shoots!

Very nice, Cameron! I've got a new bamboo a few days ago too. It's said P.auresulcata but i'm not sure 'cos a funny colour of a new growth.

Image

And my long time cultivated bamboo starts growing too. Last spring I divided a huge clump of my 20 + years Phylostachis and hope this season the new clumps would be growing well.

Could be one of many types of Areosulcata. Nice plant though. My Fargesia Rufa just started to put out some new leaves. I have a few pots of seedlings I need to plant soon!

I have a few naturally growing seedlings of Fargesia Jumbo. You can see stems of the mother plant that was blooming 3 years ago and has died though

Thanks, Canadianplant!

Tim, I didn;t check too thoroughly on this P. japonica, but there are new shoots emerging on my other specimen. Both plants also have new leaves emerging from existing canes.

Igor, maybe over time the new growth on that Phyllostachys aureosulcata will be more yellow-ish!

That Pseudosasa looks much better than I would have thought. John W. sent me a picture of one growing on Dal campus, he said this was the first year that it has retained (mostly) green leaves.. That is, if I am remembering correctly.

Mine was ok after the winter 10/11...... Still had green, untill I left it uncovered in february, and killed it outright :( I think theyre tougher then we give them credit for.

Paul, I happened to see John at the ARHS plant sale today. He said that there were some heating vents which were near the Pseudosasa at Dal, so that has helped them out a bit!

I was given an A. neomexicana and Hedychium sp., and I bought a small F. nitida. We'll see how everything does!

Canadianplant, that's Zingiber mioga and a few other species. Some Hedychium species should be hardy to a zone 7a when mulched (or maybe lower is heavily mulched).

Today I received a few more new plants.

Unfortunately, these three T. fortunei aren't for me! :
Image

But I did manage to get a couple more species of bamboo. Sasa veitchii is on the left, and Sasa pygmaea is on the right. Although there are some yellow leaves on the S. veitchii, both plants aren't bad for being 1 gallon-sized! :

I received some more stuff today.

Again, these three more new T. fortunei aren't for me:

However, I did manage to get a new Opuntia fragilis, which will eventually be planted in the desert bed:

Nice addition Cameron........those pads break off so easy......the bunnies spread them all over my garden. It looks like that fragilis came from somewhere cold since the pads are still deflated!

Yeah, there was already a pad broken off during shipping. I think it may be a BC native form of O. fragilis.

Very nice stuff. Ive wanted to try Sasa species, and theyve been recommended over the years, but all accounds in "cold" areas, are pretty bad :S You of course, should be fine :D

Where do you order this stuff from anyways? Id have to assume out of country, because ive never seen anything like your showing online in canadian sources.

Tim, those P. subvestita look great! I have an area outside where I throw some extra seeds to see if they germinate; I think I've spotted a few Proteas sprouting up! It will take some time to determine what they are, though.

Canadianplant, the first group of bamboo was from out of the country. If I ordered it from Bamboo World, I would have had to pay at least twice what I did after you factor in international shipping & the phyto certificate!
