Jubaea chilensis

I grew this Jubaea chilensis from seed 9 years ago, soon to be ten years this coming spring. I planted it last summer and this past winter was quite a challenge when at the end of November we dropped overnight to -6.9c (19.6f) on one of several cold lows. Snow and cold since then wasn't as severe but rough just the same. A little burlap tucked down in the crown during the cold spell and presto, no worries.

Barrie that palm looks awesome!!!!!
It has no damage at all from this winter that I can see. Jubaea looks like a winner here.
I can not believe the growth on yours. I have two seedlings that are soooooo small and they just don't seem to grow.
Have you got it in full sun or partial shade?
What do you feed it and how often.
My fronds seem to go a rust colour and then die off. What am I doing wrong?

That palm kicks a$$. I bought a seedling off ebay in March of 2006. I know they are slow. It has grown maybe 2-3" since I potted it up. It is probably about 10" tall. It looks very healthy and I can't wait until it starts to look like a palm. It may be 2-4 years, but I have nothing but time. Nice job on your Jubaea Chilensis.

My advise to anyone who can find one of these Jubaea and lives in an area where they will grow without too much fuss .... BUY ONE. Yup mine was seed grown in the spring of '97 and really started to take off in the last 3 years or so. It's still fairly small compared to just how big these palms get though. If anyone did spot the damage (far left on the frond tip - half way up), that's from insect damage a year or two ago. Hopefully one day mine will look like Walt Rockfellows in Seattle.

I want my jubaea to get that big in my life time but at the rate mine are growing they will never make it and I am not that old.
I have kept mine in a cold frame outside. They have never been inside in three years. They are very hardy but as I said before sooooooo slow.

Here's the same Jubaea buried in snow at the end of November last year. My coldest night then was -6.9 celcius (19.6f). Daytime highs where at or very close to the freezing mark for a few days.
Wes ... I don't fuss with this palm too much, fertilizer or otherwise. I have fertilized on occasion but I don't keep records and I don't even recall with what type of fertilizer. Big help huh! I can't think of why some of those fronds would die off like you said. Does this happen routinely or just at certain times of the year?

The frond dicolouration seems to be more in the summer.

In the mean time Wes, here's an older pic of Walt's Jubaea. It was taken in 2004 it's the only digital image I have at the moment. I've seen hard copies of more recent pics and it has grown conciderably since then.
