Happy New Year! My spinach and poppies are still looking great and STILL GROWING!

Anyone else have plants holding on for an extended fall? Also, are poppies supposed to make it this long in zone 6b?

Thats crazy.

We have been cold but dry. I don't see much growing around here the ground is froze, but so dry you can dig past the frost. Also we have not had the below 0f temps yet, and I don't think we will.
Sunshine every day and little wind, I think I love this winter. :D

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Adam, that's strange!
Did you sow late seeds?

Many of our deciduous trees still have half their leaves, that's about all that's unusual here.
Oh...and no snow.

Some years we'd have it up to the windowsills by now. :?

Happy fresh veggie munching...

It is a little crazy... I think we have had no below zero (celcius) period for much longer than a steady 24 or 36 hours yet. Oh yeah, and no snow, at least shovellable. But a forty minute drive in any direction, they have had shovellable snow. The beauty of living in such a unique microclimate, sandwiched between the warmth of Lake Ontario and the protection of the Niagara Escarpment.

Barb, I planted our poppy seeds in March. They grew, then flowered, in June I think. they naturally shed seed, and I began to see new growth of plants in late September. They could practically flower now by the looks of things. The coldest we have had was -6c so far this winter, so lets see what this cold front brings us over the next 24 hours.

Today I was in our winter hoop house, built each year over our garden (and grapefruit tree and pomegranate tree). The loganberry bush still has leaves, albeit red leaves from the cold. Curious.
Anyone else have plants hanging on longer than usual?

Nothing is alive atm here ( we had a few nights at 20C, which is quite warm here for this time o year ( usually its that cold straight threw december, not 4 days out of the last 60! )

I did have broccoli growing until mid december, and flowering! My blackberry clump had green leaves untill a week before christmas, as well as my raspberries! The bamboo was covered literally a month later then last winter as well. They both took -18C, the fargesia rufa, taking no damage at all, and my Phyllosctachys Areosulcata alata having minor leaf burn.

IF those poppies are icelandic poppies, the "common" red ones, or the ones used in baking, they can take some serious cold. IIR they are some of the first plants to pop in the spring (after crocus and what not). Seeing how mild its been down there, and how they are right up to your foundation, it isnt too surprising that they are growing.

I have some Petunias and Verbenas that are still alive, and trees here and spring bulbs are already blooming. Im glad its spring though time to start gardening. :)
