Video update - almost out of this winter!
Another video update. Magnolia leaves looking pretty much toast. Hope it doesn't have any dieback.

No worries with the magnolia. They do that and it will be fine. They defoliate yearly regardless of leafburn or not. New leaves replace the old through spring and summer.
Everything looks really good! Really thinking that the trachys will be happy to get out of t huts they look good in there.

Thanks for update Tim. It appears your high of 3F with low of -5F caused the damage. Hopefully it will get a tad hardier with establishment. The UCONN botanical web site states BBB is hardier than EB in central Connecticut where UCONN is located. I think they are a z6a. There is another web nursery offering the Mags which survived the best in the Cinncinnati area. You may want to try those too since the leaves may stay greener at low temps. My EB never saw a high of 3F......we generally get above 12F for daytime highs......rare occurances will be in the upper single digits. This may be the limiting factor.

Hi Tim,
you'll need to connect with Cincinnati Frank who's got a strain of Southern Magnolia which stayed 'mint' after -24F. That would blow the doors of Edith Bogue.
Here's my beat up EB.........just kidding............the only damage is from the bird flying over who dropped a few bombs.

Wow Tim, that looks great. What was your winter low, and your coldest winter high?

Hi Tim,
we had a mild winter. Low temp of 5F. Lowest maximum temperature was 20F. Not much of a test.

Hi John,
Regarding removal of protection.............I'll look at the long term forecast about May 7. If it looks OK, I'll remove the protection.
I just visited Bill MA's yard today and his little gem Magnolias which got blasted last winter look 'mint' after this winter. That's how mild we were this year.
Taken today, Southern Magnolia 'Little Gem'

Hi Jim,
I'm in the 9th inning now.......I don't need lots of rain followed up with a low in the single digits or teens........that would mean Trachy spear pull.
Like today...................it rained most of the day................everything is saturated and it's suppose to get down into the upper teens Monday night.......possible spear pull if I didn't have it protected. I'm waiting until the long term shows no lows below 25F.

That would be extra innings Barb-I don't expect a Canadian to know that though...

Hey -those Canucks look pretty unstopable!
Tim
DID you mean March 7th?????
I agree about the Trachys, that has been the spear-pull formula for mine every fall.
I think mine are tougher by March as they are hardened off or F'ed or looking
