Palm pics from 2-16-12

Here are some pics of a few of the palms-

Quite a few are uncovered for now-mostly the Sabals and a
few of the Trachys are uncovered except for a light cover to keep night frost off.

I like to pull the lights up as soon as possible so I can pull the mulch back
and allow the sun to warm the soil...soil temps started @36F lets see what a couple mild
days in the 40s and 50s does to the soil temp.

All spear-pull was cause one night before protect...23F was the forecasted low 14F actual



Fort x Wag has pulled every year but the first,lost another leaf but should recover from here on out.

C.Cerifera lost it's top last year but regrew from pups-it lost one spear over the winter.

My little Takil pulled but should recover and appears to have survived it's first winter.

T.Tesan-(S-pull)-this one has had a rough life,spear-pulling a half a dozen times
in 3 years from cheap bug spray-supposed to be Neem but was mostly veggie oil!

Leaves are mostly in good shape-good winter to plant a Princeps!

B.Eriospatha was also not amused by previous rainfall and 14F temps and pulled for the first time in 4 years!
Looks like it will come back..inspite of the gaping hole in the center.

I think the rest are o.k.-this definitely shows the difference a little more size makes as the "bigger"palms did not pull
and should be ready for last protection in the future-later on with the protection and earlier off...ideally.


Small Takil-one of very few small palms to survive 14F intact,probably because the bud is lower to the ground.

This Cerifera has been as tough as any Fortunei-etc,surviving numerous visits to the single digits....
(never pulled!)this palm may be as hardy as Fortunei.

Looking in front of Cactus house-I was very tempted to remove this cover for
just the rain shield from hear on out-kind of a tough call right now-all in all-
because I would normally uncover in less than 2 weeks...I think I will wait a little longer.(-;

This is the bigger Fortunei that was trunk cut to the ground 2 springs ago-not a bad recovery for 2 years!

Jim, these nice days are sure giving me the itch to remove coverings and lights thats for sure, but being a Midwesterner we both know it can turn on a dime and get nasty cold and snow still.

Holy cow, Jim, look at that big Trachy (recovered from your chain saw surgery)
and the big NainiTal too...and I do admire that C.cerifera, obviously tougher than C.humilis?

Good to know that B.eriospatha handled rain and 14F, wouldn't have thought so.

Obviously the size thing is true...a little bit older, larger and they make it.
Little guys should be out of their spear pull mode completely by next year. Hope so.

Always like a peak inside your GH during winter.
Can you just open up each end, instead of taking the whole cover off?

WOW Jim, that's a great update. You got a 'ton' of palms. You know the rule.........when you uncover.........an arctic blast is just around the corner!

Your Trachy which was trunk cut 2 years ago looks amazing! Great job you didn't toss it in the trash 2 years ago!!

No Sabal palmettos or Washy filiferas?? I think you can squeeze them in there somewhere!

We've had a very mild winter. I think your low has been what we usually get down here; we've had a north Texas winter around here.
I still expect spring snow from the Gulf moisture moving up early.

Palms: superb! Where to start.

Chammies: yes, super tough. right up there with Trachy.

Needles: if there is every a palm you can leave uncovered, that will be it.

Butia: my fave. I have not had one recover from spear pull, but if anyone can do it, you are the guy.

Trachy: I missed that you had a princeps in the ground. Congrats!

I looked at the record low for Feb 18th and it is -14F here.

The cover that is on there has 1 layer of 1" bubble wrap and 2 layers of plastic.
If it doesn't get below 0(F) it's not needed,I have a tarp I can throw over on rainy days...
I usually remove this one for that by March 1 if the 15 day supports that. ...
getting close.

I do have a couple Washys(probably a Filifera and Robusta),no interest in Palmettos though
although I will be planting a S.McCurtain in a couple weeks.

My Butia was just starting to speed up too-the rest of
it looks perfect though so,hopefully a speedy recovery

Usually I would say it's a given that some severe cold is coming still but this year
MAY be different....I don't see much difference in the current pattern to the one
that scorched Ok & Tx this past summer.

Interesting that the F's Almanac finally got the winter forecast right and yet they are
predicting a cool summer....can't wait to see it all play out.

2/19/12 Nice enough day to drag Palms out in the sun for the day. They have over wintered in the garage really well..even pushing new spears.

I have all but the most tender palms outside now, and plan to drag Bizzie out today as we look to be low zone 10 for the next 10 days down here!

Ya know, we've only had really 2 snows this year....no storms, just nice snows. All of January was no moisture and above normal temps so much so that I left covers off both my seedling Trachy, and another one I have that is about 3ft tall.

We have maybe another 25-30 days to go till were in the clear...at least to leave Trachy's out.

2 snows here as well, and both light. We often get thick wet snow march - april, so not giving up yet on "winter" but temps are so moderate it is easy to think we are done for extreme temps.

Only rain here lately....
The Princeps is planted in the Cactus house,soil temps in the mid 40s.

The same with the McCurtain but it is outside of the Cactus shelter.


I ahd been leaving them out for a while to adjust to the sun and get
used to having their roots a little cooler like they will be when planted.

Not sure what to expect this summer-
I have seen one forecast for cool and dry(this one got the winter right)
but the pattern looks like it could easily go back to a heat wave again,
maybe over a larger area too.


I don't mind the cool summer at all-as long as spring is warm...
